Strange Windows 8.1 freezing

Hi.

When I boot up my PC nowadays, once in every 2 boots or thereabouts I get either one or another type of freeze. Both are in the case that my PC successfully boots to desktop. The rest of the time, when it doesn't freeze like this, my PC can stay on for as long as it wants with no issues.

Firstly, is a semi-freeze, where I can still move my mouse around, highlight some things, open some windows, but sort of the more I use the system the less responsive things become.

Secondly is just a full blown freeze. I'll be doing something and bam, all responsiveness is gone and I have to kill the system.

I reinstalled Windows shortly ago and I had the same sort of problems on the old installation... This leads me to believe it might be software, but I can't really be sure what.

Any suggestions?

Looking at the "Administrative Events" logs shows a swathe of errors. Most of them seem to be what I assume are two isolated issues. One is the Oculus Rift service/manager, which seems to be posting a lot of errors which could explain startup issues, but another is "DeviceSetupManager".

This recent thread shows people with a variety of different modern motherboards having issues:

So this issue appears to be to do with Windows. Disabled automatic driver info and it may solve that issue. I've also disabled OVRServiceLauncher from Startup to see if this helps.
