We have been looking at replacing our mondeo ghia x estate with an x type or similar, a few have been interesting but all the low mileage ones have come from the Bradford area! I am aware that clocking can take place but have had a look at the mot history of two of them, which ties in with the mileages, including a 2004 car with 28000 miles on it.

The question is are these history's believable as the car would have had to be clocked each year or is there no reason to be suspicious.
thanks

The same guy was advertising on autotrader 4-5 months ago when I was looking for an X-Type, price seemed v.low compared with others at the time.

When I rang, the guy at the other end literally sounded like he was from another planet, I couldn't undesrtand a word, I just put the phone down...

Given the 04 example, with 28k on its clock, you have to wonder the state of a car that's averaged 59 miles per week use through its life, I'd personally not touch it with a barge pole even if the mileage were true, which I very much doubt.

Disregard miles on the clock and look for one owner, FSH examples and let those blinkered by "OMG! It must be low miles!!" Get what they deserve.

I had an '04 2.0 V6 (actually a 2.1 in size - AJ20-V6) a good few years ago and I can honestly say I've never owned a more unreliable car. Every single common fault that was mentioned on owners forums that could go wrong with it did go wrong with it.

Even the two Fiat's I've owned were more reliable. I was never more glad to see the back of a car when I sold it. Curious to hear why you are looking to move from a Mondeo to an X-Type given that they share the same underpinnings in the shape of the Ford CD132 platform?. Of course your current Mondy could be an older version, you didn't mention it's model year.

If it were me I'd move to a newer Mondeo if you are happy with the model and leave the X-Type well alone. Just my opinion, mind. ;)

Mondeo ghia x v6 2.5 year 2000 so the older shape. We have had it for ten years now and just looking for a change . But as we have not found something that is much better in terms of space or toys getting very tempted to just keep it running until a big bill arrives. 25 to 35 mpg depending on traffic but depreciation per year now is £0.
Other half has a 2.8 z3 so my car has to be practical.

So if it was only used once a week, to go to the shops on a 59 mike round trip, garaged all week and serviced at no expense spared exactly on schedule, you still wouldn't touch it?

My mondeo has done an average of 115 miles a week over its ten year life, should I chuck it in the bin because its not been used enough?

My 05 plate x-type estate has 24,500 on the clock and as I bought from new I know the mileage is legit :) No it's not for sale.

Mine's been very reliable, the only two things I'd say to check for apart from the usual stuff with any secondhand car would be the condition of the front tyres - even though its 4wd the fronts wear more than the rears. Secondly, make sure you can open the tailgate glass. There's an annoying common fault with the x-type estate in that water gets into the mechanism and it either stops working, or the ******** thing pops open when you start the engine. The simple work-around is lock the doors before you start the engine.

Oh ... and my fuel consumption is crap (2.5 litre petrol) as it's mostly used on short journeys. I get about 220-250 miles per 60 litre tank. It's much better on a long run, more like 350 to a tank - but other cars do better.

I've heard such a disproportionate number of tales of dodgy used cars from Bradford that I don't think I'd ever buy any car from there let alone one that you're not sure about.

I don't personally see the issue, i've bought (and still own) a car which was at the time a 23 year old car with 80k on the clock, that's what? 66 Miles a week?

The 1st owner sold it at 11 years old with I think 26k on the clock so it aint like it's simply been stashed away as it got older, it's never been used much, i've had it 7+ years & only done 10k in it. Yet i've spent shedloads on it, it was getting an oil change every 6 months when it had only done 500 miles sometimes!

Low mileage does not mean it's not looked after.

Exceptions to every rule, sure, but in the main, I'd prefer something that's been used regularly and not just for short, stop start trips - not to mention a car with 100k on the clock at 10k p/a mileage is not going to be shagged out nor commanding a silly low mileage price premium.
