I just got hold of an x1900XTX to replace my x1800XT, as it cost me pretty much nothing to do so but I've noticed that the idle temp (43c) is 12c lower than the x1800XT used to be!? This means that the new load temps are now about the same as the old card was at idle! I don't think the temperature sensor is wrong either because the fan noise is definately less audible than it was before and both cards are the same make. Not that I'm complaining but can anyone think why this would be the case?

Idle temp on my HIS x1900xtx is usually about 48. Load temps were pretty
high at around 88 degrees but ramped up the fan with ati tool and now load
is usually in the 70's but these cards do run pretty hot.

Yeh but being that the x1900 is more advanced than the x1800, you wouldn't really expect it to run cooler would you?! Maybe the x1900 uses some kind of uber tim but saying that, I replaced the stock paste on the x1800 with AS5. It's just weird.

@Cybermav: It's not that, both are cards are made by Connect3D so same stock cooler.

I have an old (and thus early core) X1800XT. it ran hotter than anything on stock cooler, it is now WC and still hits 55 loaded.
my house mate has an X1900XT of much newer blood, that loads at about 60 on stock cooler.

i think its normal. ati just re-spun the silicon, or tsmc diddled their process and its saved a lo of current leakage.

if the back of the core is about the same temp as the cooler, then all is well. if the cooler is icey cold and back or core is white hot, then you have bad contact, if both are red hot, faulty probe.

Perhaps but my x1800XT is only 10 months old and you say that yours ran hot but I never ever saw mine go above 66c load, probably because there's a 120mm fan blowing cold air straight at the card. As I said, I'm not complaining anyway!
