I like the age of empires serious but is there another game simular to this? Maybe a bit more modern? Also being multiplayer is a bonus. What games do you recommend?

command and conquer(future setting), world in conflict(modern day) only 2 other than the ones mentioned i can think of, off the top of my head

There arent many RTSs like Age of Empires these days. They've all been dumbed down ;) But with new types of gameplay. Company of Heroes is really good though

I've been playing Age of Mythology a lot lately. Very similar to AoE but a touch faster. good fun :)

Paraworld is another you may want to consider.

There haven't been any games that offer good combat AND base building in my opinion since Rise of Nations.

RoN never had good combat imo, bit cartoonish imo, but it was I admit very very addicting, the thing tho that was terrible about it were all the limits and caps, even at fast game speed I always hit all my caps, commercial caps, military ones, city caps, should be at least 4 times as high the caps ( the max cap I mean once u get all library techs done).

Ontopic:

Empire earth original is great still imo, alternatively you could try the C&C series.
Have played AOE2 for like 4 years (including clan and matches etc) and the original aoe even longer, but not as often as aoe 2 though, still one of the best games ever imo.

My old clanmates that were hooked on the aoe series moved on to age of mythology and the warcraft 3 games but I personally didn't like the warcraft games that much as it was leaning towards being an rpg and I don't like em. Liked AoM for a long time but when the expansion came out (and I bought it) I somehow lost interest very soon after.

My favorite RTS is Galatic Battlegrounds with the expansion. Its basically a sci fi AOE with plane and mech and shield units thrown into the mix. All 8 sides were totally unique as well unit wise.

I've played GB, but it was just age of empires 2 with starwars units for me so didn't play it for long, as it was the exact same engine and preffered middle ages to star wars.

Yeah both worthy games, I just preferred the sci fi setting with more units and buildings etc.

I wasn't too impressed with Age of Empires 3 it just didn't seem to have the depth. To me the best bit about Age of Empires was building a really good base and then an army and defending it and attacking others bases. Hate rushing techniques would much rather a slow well fought game.

Ahh aoe 3 was really poor, ruined the series for me, but then again most 3d games did for me, empire earth was one of the few exceptions. I'd love an aniversary edition though of aoe 2 or 1, with no changes at all in gameplay only optional addons or something ( wich you can turn off ) and newer gfx and perhaps an enhanced mission edition with more triggers.

I had a lot of fun with Rise of Legends a couple of months ago, it's like Rise of Nations, but dumbed down a bit, still extremely fun and lots of micromanagement :)

The only game that comes close to AoE imo is EE, as already mentioned.
AoE2 is the best RTS I've ever played with C&C:TD coming a close second. AoE3 was superb imo - I loved every bit of it including the campaigns and skirmishes. The whole city card system that they had was rather neat and original I thought.

a vote here for company of heroes, definitely my choice of best rts of all time.. they have currently cocked it up with the expansion but in a couple of patches it should be playable again
