Im looking for some recommendations on some strategy games. I Installed clash of clans on my iphone and was pleasantly surprised I quite like it :D

So What is the best when it comes to the pc when it comes to that style of gamplay. Building your town lvling up everything and building your army to fight etc.

Turn based : Civilization 4 or 5 are hands down the best.
Real time: Large scale wise I like Sins of a Solar Empire, or Supreme commander.
Total war games are mix of turn based and real time!
Small scale RTS I still like games like Command & Conquer 3, Age of empires 2 ( 3 if 3d is more your thing, imho aoe2 is much better still). Starcraft is probably the best, but I avoid that title because I don't like the price and that it's not on steam.

Turn based: Endless Legend - I've been genuinely surprised how good this is. Second would be Civ VI or V.

RTS battles, turn based stategy: Medieval Total War II or Rome 2, personally I prefer MTWII as the siege side is far more fun. I haven't played Atilla though, but heard good things.

If you just want pure strategy: Crusader Kings II will drive you bonkers by being interesting and insanely tricky :)

Hehe, I personally find Rome 2 a total borefest. Loads of meaningelss hassle and a tad on the easy side, I also don't like the way you train armies.

Medieval 2 is fun, but imho Rome ( the first), Empire and Shogun 2 are the best Total war games! Rome is the most fun.
in Medieval 2 the turns take to long because of all the ''extra'' characters like Merchants, inquisitors, witches, priests, etcetc... Economy is good though, you can get nicely sized armies up.
Shogun 2 is a bit annoying on the economy side, you can't really support big armies and have to turtle a lot just before the shogun gets ****ed off at you ( I usually save in excess of 100.000 koku before taking that one land that makes everyone declare war at you because of your size...).
Empire you have to like the era, I loved it because of the trade and plantations and stuff, but it is a bit on the tough side compared to other total war games, can put off beginners. I also love the ship battles in this game!

Civ 4 (Beyond the Sword) or Civ 5 (+all expansions).

XCOM: Enemy Unknown+ Expansions is great too but probably not along the same lines as you are thinking

In addition to the above:
Galactic Civilizations I and II (not played III yet) are also very enjoyable turn-based games in a sci-fi setting.
Dawn of War I and II and the expansions are pretty good RTS in the Warhammer 40k universe (II doesn't have base-building, but is still a good strategy game. I is very much in the old base-building and fighting RTS genre).
Company of Heroes is a very nice WWII RTS.
Warcraft III is an older classic RTS.
Kings Bounty and the Heroes of Might and Magic series (for me, especially II, III and V) also combine town-building and turn-based exploration, resource-gathering and fighting. All are engrossing, demanding and rewarding of perseverance.
Crusader Kings II takes strategy in a slightly different direction, with some town management, but also incorporating management of realms, treasuries, and your own dynasty (marriages, alliances, religion, etc.). It's interesting and deep and you can lose yourself in it for dozens of hours.

Edit: I say "in addition" but I see someone else mentioned CKII in the time it took me to write my post. That's what I get for being slow, I guess...

Oh about civ, civ 5 is probably more forgiving for a beginner, Civ4 beyond the sword was better, but that is my personal preference, especially with corporations like Sid's Sushi company I was dominating any game, because civ 5 games take to long late game to conquer everyone because of the 1 unit per tile limit. I spend ages moving 100+ units every turn.

I'm thinking a small scale RTS game like the command&conquer games of Age of Empires is easier though and better for the OP.

EDIT:

Company of heroes, 1 or 2, how could I forget, superb game, less focus on base building, but an awesome game overall.

Warcraft 3 is probably still very popular, and would probably be kind of the game you're looking for!

RTS top picks:
- Age of Empires 2
- Company of Heroes w/ Blitzkrieg mod
- Command and conquer Generals new mod Rise of Reds recently came out so maybe worth dusting that old CD http://www.moddb.com/mods/rise-of-the-reds adds 2 new factions Russia and Europe
- Anno series - economy aspect is excellent, the war aspect is average, but overall really good

Yeah C&C3 was the last one I enjoyed too, Company of Heroes is brilliant but the second one didn't really draw me in at all, I find the blizzard mechanic on snow levels to be more annoying than anything else.
