Hi guys,

I have been playing around with all different methods of reading news on the iPad but so far have not found my ideal solution.

Currently Flipboard is my favourite way to browse news but sometimes it displays repeated articles and different news sources are displayed separately.

I have seen good reviews about Reeder on the iPad but haven't managed to get into RSS. Last night I tried to set up google reader but the GUI is not too great.

Ideally I'd like something like google reader that accumulates news but has a nice, friendly, welcoming user interface, something that I will enjoy using. Offline reading will also be handy so I can read it on the tube.

Please let me know how you guys get news on the iPad so I can get closer to my ideal solution!

I know you say you haven't managed to get into RSS - but it is the way forward :p

I have Reeder on my iPhone/iPad, then have my GMail subscribed to a bunch of RSS feeds I'm interested in (9to5mac, MacRumors, TheVerge etc.). Then I get all my news through Reeder! It's easy to read, and easy to flick through news you don't want to read :)

I use Reeder on Mac and iPhone & Perfect RSS on iPad to catch up on my own feeds. I used to love Flipboard (it's still great). But my favourite app is now Zite as it curates articles from various interests, learns the type of articles you like and presents you with more of those. Great way to read to get the information your interested in whilst broadening your reading sources.

Other decent news apps include:
Google Currants
AOL Editions
Flud News
Yahoo! Livestand
Huff Post

How come you don't use Reeder on the iPad?

Marky have you tried Mr. Reader?

I switched from Reeder to that.

It doesn't have any cool pinch to expand or anything but I prefer the fact there are thumbnails for a feed that has pictures and and the news item appears in a floating page in the middle of the screen so when browsing feeds you can view more of it without opening it, not to mention you can choose how you want to view it on the fly.

Definitely check it out if you haven't already.

Haven't heard of it actually! I'll check it out right now :) Thanks!

The reason I asked uniQ why he doesn't use Reeder on the iPad is I wondered if he was going to say Perfect RSS is better. Another app I haven't tried, so I'll check it out also :p

It's very similar to Reeder to be fair. It just has a couple of extra features that I prefer. I subscribe to a rather optimistic number of feeds which can get out of hand trying to keep up pretty quickly. Perfect RSS has an option to mark as read when you scroll. That way I just read what I think sounds interesting and anything I scroll past automatically gets removed.

Thanks for the input guys, I'll subscribe to a few things on google reader then will have to decide between Reeder and Mr Reader!

I purchased Mr Reader last night and have enjoyed using it so far.

What are good news feeds? Currently I am subscribe to bbc, Reuters and the guardian. There are so many articles a day how do keep up? Also how do you stop duplicate articles from appearing? Eg breaking coming from all three sources? I know that google reader has bundles eg news bundle, but with so many feeds isn't it too much to go through? And won't a lot be duplicated stuff?

Since I started using Flipboard, I can't say I've ever felt the need to find another app/system. Yes you do get duplicated articles but I've not found it a major problem to be honest. Maybe I'm just a bit of a "stick in the mud" and don't want to try any alternatives but I really like Flipboard.

I did like Flipboard initially but then found it a bit too overwhelming, so many articles on a page then repeated articles over the next few pages. It's a great app with a brilliant UI but it didn't tell me when a new article was posted I just had to keep checking.

Am finding RSS pretty good, especially with Mr Reader. Just trying to find a way to get News feeds manageable, Reuters UK is not bad, it doesn't post as much as BBC.

The BBC site lets you subscribe to sub-categories (you can find an RSS feed in almost every page) so just pick out the ones you like e.g. I have Magazine, Technology, Formula 1 and Business. It's the same for the Guardian.

Some other good feeds you might like:

In Focus (news picture summaries)
Daily Dose of Imagery
First Showing (film news)
Anandtech
Engadget

(Sorry on my iPad so hard to provide links, just google them)

Great shout with those feeds, really good ones.
