Stream from PC/Mac/NAS to iPhone/Touch

Totally new to iPhone (in fact any Apple product) but I am looking to see if I can stream video to the iPhone from either a PC or my NAS (which is in effect a Linux box) ...

Possible?
Anyone done it?
Any experience or guides I can be sent to?

There was a program to stream, errrr, it was on Installer I think. Not that that helps anyway. Whilst the theory was good, it still required all the videos to be in the right format, meaning everything would need converting anyway.

As for streaming audio, not sure there's a market for it...

I'd love to be able to do that. I keep all my music on an iMac upstairs and stream it to my laptop which I use 90%. Saves on disk space. I'd be a happy chap if I could do that with my iPhone too. And not just over a local network, but over the Internet as well.
