Set myself up with a WHS 2011 server, moved all my media to it and set up my homegroup/remote internet access/lights-out. Everything seems to be working nicely and now I want to extend the use of it.

What is the best way to serve media to iOS devices? I've seen dedicated apps you install on the devices but also have seen you can stream using iTunes, has anyone got any advice on the best solution? Thanks :)

Well, I'm using TVersity as a media extender, allows me to stream my audio/video/pictures to iPods/iPhones/Xbox 360/Nintendo Wii/PS3/Other PCs. However, you may have to fiddle around with it for a little while, such as getting the right codec pack for you, and configuring some other settings based on your PC and Network environment.

It can be quite CPU intensive depending on whether it must transcode the media so it's in a readable format for the device. If you have compression on maximum to compensate for a slow network, this will also add to your CPU usage. As for network intensive, I've never had a problem.

It does have problems with .mkv files though, but there is a way around it, I just haven't been bothered to look into it.

I'm using "Goodplayer" for iPad. Will play from SMB/CIFS shares on the WHS, as well as UPNP. No need to transcode and it's played everything I've got.
