Hi guys,

I can play MKV files from a USB stick on my Sony BDV E870 bluray player, but whilst I can browse media files on my PC via Windows Media Player and DLNA, it will only play the low def stuff. Does anyone know why this is and how I can change this?

Tried using an alternative media server? PS3 Media Server is pretty good (works for devices other than PS3s), could well be an issue with WMP.

I've never had much joy with WMP. I don't use a DLNA server any more (I play direct from a NAS share and let the BluRay do the decoding) but Serviio worked really well when I was using it.

I have the same problem with my Panasonic, 720 is fine but 1080 is horrible and blocky, i have been blaming my Virgin Super hub for being poo.

I play 1080p stuff all the time which streams through my VM SuperHub and it's fine...

XBMC can share it's library

Noticed my library popped up on my Surface as a network 'location', I could browse and play them. Not sure how it shares them, will check tonight

Streaming can be very picky. I changed from a QNAP NAS which my Panasonic BluRay used to lose connection to all the time and freeze 720P mkv

With my HP Microserver 1080P is perfect now.

I believe your tv is doing the decoding. It will be limited by the power of that. Find out what it can play and stick to downloading only that format.

As I understand it, your PC wont play the MKVs while using WMP? Or your BDP wont play them via DLNA?

My Sony BDP wont play MKV over DLNA and I assumed its something to do with digital rights, as all my TVs stream them fine.

if its a case of your PC not playing them, try VLC player.

My Panasonic wont play .MKV file over DLNA, however there is a "Network Drive" option where if I type in the name of the folder and the I.P of the device its stored on it will pick it up and play 720p fine, just not 1080.

Its bugs me ever so slightly because everything is cat5e.

I used to have a media player a while back, a Linksys wireless one with a DVD player built in.

It played 1080p fine using a wired connection (had to have the PC on to decode it, it used WMP) but doing it via wireless it would stutter like hell. However the same media would stream wirelessly and play on my tablet doing the encoding on the fly.

So maybe its a case of the PC decoding the file and streamed it decoded makes the data "bigger" and maxes yuor wifi speed.

I use plex to stream to my tv upstairs. I don't know if it's the TV or Plex, but it's smoother than my htpc down in the living room running xbmc
