So I've been contemplating how to go about streaming music from my HP Proliant server running Win2K13. It seems a wise idea considering my server is running pretty much 24/7.

Now I'm curious who here is doing the same? If so, can I ask what application you're using? After a little surfing around, I came across Subsonic. Has anyone got any experience using this service? Is it the application of choice?

Any input would be much appreciated.

Ideally, I was looking to stream from my works laptop as well as my Android phone. Subsonic states it supports Android and I'm sure I could get my hands on the client application to run on Windows 7.

I was just curious on peoples thoughts on Subsonic? Do people use it with their servers or is there something more popular out there that I should be considering instead?

I have a whole load of music that I'd love to stream from both my phone at laptop whilst at work. I recently canceled my subscription to Spotify and I've been lacking tunes in recent weeks. It would be nice if I could get myself an alternative service using all my stored music instead.

I use Subsonic, its quite nice and pretty easy to customise.

google music will do that.

In all honesty, I don't want anything to do with Google. Their not a service that I advocate for a number of reasons, but hey, that's another story for another time.

I'll read a little more into Subsonic once I get home from work!

Yes! Long time Subsonic user here, well worth donating too if you get on with it. My Subsonic server is publicly accessible from my servers at home and I stream to my Android phone as well as my PC at work. I have a few other friends that use the server too. As mentioned above, it's very customisable if you want to tweak the layout/style of a theme slightly (although beware when you come to upgrade). It doesn't consume a great deal of memory and doesn't use any noticeable CPU unless you're transcoding lots of video. You can configure certain devices and/or users to auto-transcode music to save bandwidth, e.g. have your Android player set to stream at 128kbps for 3G use.

I think they've moved to a subscription pricing model now rather than a one-off fee and development has slowed down, but I'd still have a go with it. It's a lovely piece of kit IMO :)

Same as above. Long time subsonic user streaming via web browsers, iPhone, iPad etc. it's one of the few program's I can install then ignore :) requires very little maintenance bar occasional updates.

If you use one of the apps in the iPhone (probably android too) then you need to donate to get a licence for the api but its well worth or as it removes the adds from the web interface too

Thanks very much for the heads up guys! I never got a minute to myself over the weekend but I'll be certainly looking further into Subsonic. Why I've not considered streaming my music at home until now, I'll never know?!
