I was reading awhile back about software that lets you stream / encode AVI's on the fly and watch them on your 360.

I know you need Media player 11 to connect to, but thats the program that does the conversion bit ?

What i want to know provides the best quality?

I have:

a) Output from PC with various media formats played in a media player utilising the k-lite codec pack. I have VGA out from my graphics to my VGA port on the HDTV and can just extend my desktop. I then just play the media and drag it to the HDTV and have fit to screen size option on.

b) Output from PC through the xbox using TVersity to upscale the media. Is it worth doing? Will i notice the difference?

If no one knows the answer i will be investigating this next week.

Use the pc and upscale the media on that? Its always going to be less hassle to be honest :) I have 150 videos streamed to my 360 wirelessly to my 360 using tversity or whatever its called, and it can be quite flakey to set up :)

Ive been using TVersity and it seem pretty good.. I got some WMV's to stream lovely with no loss in quality.

Although for some reason it wont transcode any other video formats. I tried a AVI and the xbox just hangs.. im going to investigate :)

The 360 will stream WMVs anyway from the latest Media Player :) I found TVersity to be very buggy with frequent crashes. Transcode is ok, but I still wish MS would add some codecs to the 360 so we can play things natively :)

I had issues getting tversity to transcode divx and the like. I found the best order to be:

Uninstall all codecs
reboot
Install TVsersity
Install a codec pack or ffdshow
reboot
start tversity

hey presto, transcoding of all files works.

TVersity is immature code at the mo, certainly, adding in my 80 gig odd of music takes it out straight away, too many file for it to index. But if I add stuff in batches, it works fine.

WMP11 will only allow music, pics and wmvs, no transcode support.

Only other option is MCE + transcode 360 or wait for Vista which includes the media centre bits (or at least the premium versions do) Transcode 360 has been ratified on Vista.

Yeah i think the Vista option will be best.. Im planning to get a new laptop in a month or two so i think i might get one with Vista and a DX10 card.

Hopefully my media centre will be sorted and ill have much streaming joy.

Sounds pretty similar to my setup.

X360 connects to router via CAT5. PC connects to router over the wifi connection.

Firewall on PC has ports punched thru for the media connect services (so the xbox can see the PC.

No special settings on the router for PC to Xbox connectivity.

i've been using the tversity program the past few days and i also cannot play half the vids - 360 just hangs.

not sure which codecs it's got installed, so there could be problems there.

not checked out transcode yet. i DID try converting some AVI to WMV lastnight. the resulting quality was low and it took all night for one file, so that's no real solution.

i'm planning on a good HTPC/Media Centre this year with Vista but for now I definitely want to be able to stream my vids easily.

If you install transcode 360 and have the relevant directshow codecs installed it will.

cool....i'm going to get a copy of media centre i think.

I've tried tversity and failed with it....too much hassle.

media centre should be simple enough out of the box?
