Streamlining Ubuntu Netbook

In a bid to breath some life into my Samsung NC10, I just installed Ubuntu Netbook.

I've spent the morning removing most of the pre-installed software (33 according to the history) that I don't need, and disabling things from the startup applications list.

Anything else I can do to streamline it? I want it to boot and run as efficiently as possible.

hi I installed this yesterday and I am not really impressed
this is on my asus 1005ha netbook.

the wireless worked on live usb but on the os itself it is not working
there is no menu
and that task bar on the left hand side is SO annoying

what I fail to understand is that a lot of ocuk folk use this and I can't atm work out why!

I have a samsung NC10 and I would recommend you try out meego 1.1 on it, it's very fast compared to ubuntu and works great on it (sleep/keyboard etc...). Boot time on mine with BIOS and all is about 30 seconds, with UI ready and responsive. I'm running on a seagate 7.2k rpm drive so it may be a little different on the stock 160GB 5.4k drive, although i'm inclined to think that drive speeds does little to speed up meego's boot time, as my other netbook (lenovo S13-3t) with an Intel X25-M G2 SSD hardly boots any faster (although i'm running meego pre 1.2 which may have some problems)

If you want to streamline ubuntu more I'd recommend you install bootchart and start measuring the boot time. You can then see what is taking a long time.

It's mostly the daemons that are started at startup that will slow the computer. Also have a look at what is started by the networkmanager dispatcher because there are probably many more network services being started that you are not too interested in!

I love it. It's a fresh interface that works so much better on a small screen IMO. This would have been the perfect OS for my old touch screen NC10, but the touch screen died.

The launcher is fantastic for me! Exactly what I was after. Something like the taskbar in W7, but vertical so it doesn't take up a lot of the screen. (It is a 600px tall 16:9 panel after all).

Give it time, takes some getting used to but I'm really warming to it. Just installing a LAMP stack now.

Meego looks great, but not what I'm after at all. It looks like it's aimed more towards social networking/media and web browsing. Perfect for most netbook users then, but I'm an oddball, I use mine for web development. I'll carry out your tips on streamlining it though, thanks!

Now, anyone know how to make the launcher icons smaller?
