Strict NAT on XBL

Using the BT homehub, I noticed after BT updated my hub that I had a strict NAT. Doing some searching on google I found an xboxlive guide site that had a step by step guide to opening the NAT by this method.....

"Fire up the Xbox, go to network settings and find your Xbox's IP address as assigned by the hubs DHCP server.

Open a browser window and type http://bthomehub.home/

Click 'advanced' at the bottom of the left hand menu bar, click 'continue to advanced' and enter the username and password (Default is 'admin' for both)

Click 'devices' in the left hand menu bar.

You will see a list of devices and one of the columns lists each devices IP address. Click 'edit' on the device which has your Xbox's IP address, it should be listed as a laptop.

Tick the 'always use this address' tickbox and apply.

At the bottom of the page is a drop down box, select it and the very bottom service is Xbox live. Click and add.

Get everything saved and then reboot the hub (unplug and replug)

You should now have an open NAT and it will stay that way."

Now I've done that method and it's opened up the Nat again. My problem is although some games now let me connect and find games GRAW 2 will still not find any matches and acts like the NAT is still strict

Is there anything else I can try?

Also if I ditched this homehub and went to one of the linksys router/modems on the ocuk site is it just a matter of plugging the new router in and simple set up? Or will it only work with a bt homehub?

if you have your BT username and password then you can use pretty much any ADSL router. Yes my step by step guide for the home hub would be:

1. Open bin
2. Place Home Hub in it
3. Dispose ASAP :p

Linksys ADSL routers ive found to be unreliable hardware and software wise, Netgear I think would be a better bet, like Linksys some love them, some loathe them but I've set up several 834G's for home users and never had problems with them, never tested it with Xbox Live but id imagine it should be fine

bin it

If only for the fact your wireless network connection can only be encrypted using WEP on a homehub. Something your average script kiddie can crack in 15 minutes

Get a netgear and get a proper router.

Cool I will look into getting one of the netgears. As for the encryption is that really a problem when I use powerline adapters. Very rarely my Mrs uses the wireless with the laptop (maybe once for half hour per week)

I do sometimes use the 360 wireless too.

Does that pose a security risk with WEP?

unless you disable the wireless, its still there

WEP can be cracked by brute force, just simply sitting there using a keygen untill you find it. It can take seconds, at worst it can take half an hour

but if somebody wants in your connection, and you're only using WEP. they're going to get in. It deters your neighbours etc.. but wont stop anybody determined

reason is that WEP can only be encrypted in hex, ie numbers 0-9 and letters a-e. Fairly narrow combination and why it can be cracked by brute force. WPA on the other hand, can use most of the full asci key set, and is nearly impossible to crack by brute force.

Thanks again, I will look at getting one once my next paycheck clears. The adsl 2 ones I take are backwards compatible and fine to use with my set up?
