When people go on strike can the people striking not just be sacked as they are not working and the company employ some people who will work for the same amount of pay (or slight increase)

There seems to be a trend at the moment, first it was firefighters, then royal mail now trains. I know in France they love a good strike and train conductors were on strike there not long ago.

Simple - employ someone who will work!

This is what the unions are for, workers have the right to strike.

There are some people I think that shouldn't be allowed to strike - the emergency services and teachers.

Yes you can sack strikers - that is why you never see 1 person go on strike. The whole idea is that so many people go on strike the company cannot afford to sack them all and replace them.

this is what i thought, however sometimes companys will hire as many people "scabs" as possible for a cheaper wage untill the strikers come back, imo they should keep the scabs

The problem is those people are usually temps and are thus not looking for full time jobs. Even if they were, a company builds up a certain amount of skill and experience in its workforce that would all be lost.

And if those people happen to be filapino's who work for half the money or poles on minimum wage for your line of work, i'm sure you would change your tune.

If filapino's or poles can do the same job then its obviously a job that doesnt require much skill (generally). If thats the case they shouldnt be asking for a payrise anyway!

I used to work in a warehouse with a few kosovans, they worked extremely hard (16hr shifts!) and never complained. If they will do the job why not employ them over someone who moans about pay?

However then i suppose we need to ask why immigrants get loads of free stuff like dental, driving lessons etc etc
