Hey,

TL;DR at bottom.

At work a user had a monitor which developed stripes, unsure of what occured we replaced the monitor. It happened again.
There's other monitors in the same room, (we were thinking strobe lighting?), but none of them were affected. The ONLY difference i can tell from the other hundreds of monitors in the building, is that an extension cable was right up behind the monitor (one of them coiled up ones), and on the whole time.

Anyway the second monitor was replaced and extension cable moved, as far as i know the problem hasn't occured, but a different user is sitting there so maybe the person themselves did something.

That second monitor has subsequently been designated for the skip, so i asked to have it as a spare / whatever, hey, free monitor.

I'm just wondering if you guys have seen similar / know of a free (reseat cable?) / cheap fix.

The monitor shows no signs of stripes when off.
The stripes appear regardless of input (pc / cable / vga or dvi doesn't matter), as they appear when it is powered on even with the 'no input detected'.

Here's two pictures of it on and off, it might need a clean but otherwise when off you can't tell: http://imgur.com/a/9hOum

I've left it running a program before when we took a look at it at work, which was mainly for screen burn / image retention, and flashed RGB, 48 hours didn't make a difference.

The stripes don't overly bother me to be honest, it's not becoming my permenant main monitor, more of a secondary / lan at mates - monitor, and on some screens you don't notice it. Watching a film would be annoying though i guess.
The point is, if i can fix it a will, if not woohoo for working in IT?
