Evening lads,
Just the quick one, ive got mine 1070 strix since 2016 i believe, never changed the thermal paste, never played more than 10 hrs maybe max 15 a week - i wish i could play some more, anyways, while having my case opened i have put me hands into it while testing MAX RPM of card :D which caused in breaking some of wings of middle fan, unfortunately it was 2 consecutive wings, causing extremely high vibrations to the card, i decided to remove more wings to make it more balanced, it was fine past 2 years, but recently when playing or mor like bench testing the rig it is gettin 92c, is it worth to remove the heat spreaders and changing the compound ?

i have delided my 8700K - successfully so i know the drill, but never touched the GPU cores before :)

bless you !

Yeah, go for it. There's no reason not to. Watch out for all the little capacitors and resistors around the edge of the GPU package when cleaning off the old thermal paste, but it's pretty much impossible to damage anything if you're careful. I've repasted tens of cards at this point and never managed to damage one. Even a couple of unmoulded Vegas, which are a bit more tricky due to the exposed HBM interposer (which is extremely fragile).

Another video for you. ;)

Doesn't tell you the thickness, but the memory chips are not covered properly anyway. (1:46)

EDIT

Should have watched the whole video myself, did not see the the other thermal pads. :p

Replacement fans can usually be found on eBay. Beware breaking the tiny surface mount capacitors around the gpu die !. As a result I wouldn't recommend using liquid metal on these, Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut works well.

looks perfect for removing the stock fans and plastic shroud and cable tying 2 120mm together then to the heatsink

don't do it like that video place the fans end to end and zip tie each hole on all corners together so they naturally hold tight together then attach to heatsink

your setup doesn't look ideal though if there's fans blowing rad air on to the gpu

I have some rx580s that i use for mining...had a few fans fail on me so far...removed shroud...removed fans from shroud...refitted should which gave nice tie points for 80/90mm fans I had lying around....the cards with new fans strapped on all out perform the stock ones and that with just small old PC fans I had sitting in the draw :)

Keeping the shroud on means the fan isn't tight up against the heatsink...wouldn't be practical if using 120mm fans though obviously....plus warranty invalidated as had/wanted to snip out a plastic part that the fan sat on to give unrestricted airflow

Was also going to mention this. Can't you place the rad on the top to exhaust and have a few intake fans on the front? Might help with the temps.

hi lads,
i thought of that, but that would cost some additional temp on cpu radiator cuz hot air from gpu would go through that radiator, i think id rather have hotter gpu than cpu, im not goinf to change cpu anytime soon and gpu.. maybe :)

anyways, ordered some thermal pads off amazon, once i have them i will strip the card, change them plus paste and we will see if that gives some extra temp headroom, also considering buyin them replacement fans for cards, around 15 quid for strix 1070, not bad id say.

Personally I wouldn't buy the actual replacements, I'd ghetto rig a couple of 120mm fans on it and buy a Gelid adapter so that you can plug them directly into the graphics card fan controllers. That would perform far better than the stock fans.

Although as said previously, if aesthetics are important then this one is a non starter.

hi lads, thanks for your suggestions and ideas :)
i don't really care about aesthetics, hardware needs to do the job for me really.

Going forwards, i noticed that in msi afterburner i had limits set to 120% power and temp limit 92c - thats ok, but then i changed the power limit to 120% and temp limit 70c, and AC Odyssey runs exactly the same with favouring low gpu temps.. i dont really get it, :) anyways if i can run game as smooth with less temps.... im going to dismantle it anyways :D:D

bless you guys

allright lads !

i did it ;) i only replaced thermal paste, put new thermal pads - replaced old ones and added new ones in spots where i think need covering results ? in scenarios where gpy was hitting 92 c it is not exceeding 70 :) despite power limit set to 120 and temp limit set to 92c :)

however while tightening the the main 6x screws for radiator i used too much force and one of them just snapped, meaning theres no removing if the radiator for this lovely card anymore ;)
tbh i think that new paste and pads will last till card become obsolete in few years

heres how much thermal compound theve put around the core :O in this picture i already removed it from the core but was still plenty on capacitors ?

The stuff they use isn't conductive so makes no difference really, you almost always get some paste squeezing out to the sides when the heat-sink is applied.

i know mate it is not harm to the capacitors, it just not looking very neat :D i was expecting to see it nice and neat after disassembling really, nevermind... i did my best to remove the excess of old compound . to be honest for a second i thought.. shall i go for a liquid metal. these capacitors could be covered with some nail stuff as i did with my 8700k but naaah, temps are still at lovely level now and i love it, tbh very first GPU i have dismantled. - results !
