Hi in the last couple of years most my photography has been focused on strobist is there many of you on this forum that use off camera flash often? Also are any of you regulars on the strobist flickr stream?

Yup, and yup :) Barely ever use flash on the camera hotshoe. Strobist style is fun, and it;s amazing what you can achieve. Just takes some experimentation to get used to it.

I don't have any flash but I follow some bloke called Rick Nunn on Flickr. He is in the middle of a 50/50/50 project but he explains how he is doing every shot with a behind the scenes video.

I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I buy the kit :)

I do a fair bit of off camera flash stuff.

It's great fun! :)

I only just got into it, cheat a bit with ETTL though!

Notice a trend on where i like to put my flash ? :p

I've had a couple of SB900's for a while and have just started experimenting with them off camera, although I need to get some triggers as the Nikon built in system is rather limiting with its range.

Here's one from a recent wedding as they wanted one by the lake at night from across the water:

OCF wedding 1

I really do need to start doing some more reading and practice though, move over to fully manual when shooting with it.

Not really, would like to get into a little to learn the techniques and whats possible to expand my repertoire, but I prefer natural light wherever possible. Just sometimes natural light is not possible.

Good idea about strobist thread,

Ash2097 what gear do you have to get the shots above?

I have:

YONGNUO Speedlite YN460 ii

& 602 triggers and hardly use em, ofc probs most of you here have more than 1 flash.

So how to etc or just still life to use the flash would be handy :)

You really need a few flashes to get some good effects usually 2 or more, i really recommend David Hobby's dvd lighting seminars to make the most of light.

I'd love to get into using flashes, as that's actually my biggest limitation with things I'm trying recently, as I have no flash. I've got to pay off a guitar and camera this next 4 months though, then I'll wait to see if any new flashes come out after the new cameras and lenses. As I want a 5dMKIII I might as well wait to see if a flash comes out and spend on some form of kit!

If your using off camera flash which is really the only form of flash photography i do, I recommend just getting some Nikon SB-28's of ebay and also get some cheap wireless triggers while your at it. You don't need high end new flashes for strobist if anything you will use them less, as you will just worry when on a out door shoot that the wind is going to blow your lightstand with a very expensive flash and umbrella on. I barley use my SB-900's due to the fact if a SB-28 smashes it cost me £60 if SB-900 goes it cost me £340!!

Just sore that you shoot Canon, just to make you aware make doesn't matter when firing wireless what make your flashes are. You can get cheap new flashes for the same price as a second hand 15 year old Nikon one and the Nikon will still out live the cheap new ones.

Another of the BMW, this was taken just using 2 flashes during a 30sec exposure, by walking around popping one that was mounted on a mono-pod at the car and i had a mate sat behind the car firing one 4 times at the container.

I bought some stands, umbrellas, couple of flashes and remote triggers and all that, but I hardly use them.

I don't have much room to set it up and it's all a bit of a hassle. I wouldn't mind doing the car thing, but mine's a bit of a wreck!

Rojin is it possible to do ^^ (self portrait?) like that with 1 flash? i've been wanting to try low key for ages now.

Thanks Ash2097 ill have a look at the DVD's
