How bad is it if your nan has a stroke, ive never gone through this and ive never really known anyone else to so i dont really know how to react, i know a heart attack is bad, is it like that?

I dont know weather to be scared, my nan had a second stroke last night and she now cannot speak... her 1st one left her unable to walk, i dont know what to expect...

I dont really wana talk to my family or my gf about it because i dont want them to see how im reacting, i just want to know if its serious, very serious ect as she lives in Scotland and i havent seen her in a long time and im getting pretty scared...

Varies...Strokes can be very bad it all depends. Depending on the location of the stroke in this case it sounds like the face or something. Usually it can happen down say the left side so your arm is dead unable to move again something like that. It can be life threatening if it happens like 3 times in a row or something alough im no expert but I also have been in the same posistion as you.

Depends on the severity. My nan used to have mini strokes which did not entail any speech problems or paralasis (spelling?). Obviously the bigger ones would have more of an effect. I used to know someone who had a large one and was semi paralysed down his right side, he could still walk but struggled with some tasks.

Hope she is ok though! Best to speak to your family though and not an internet forum in all honesty.

Yeha i dont live with or around my mums family so its harder to speak to people, and i dont really wana speak to my dad about it...

as said, depends on the severity.

My dad has had 2. The first one has left him in a wheelchair with no use of his right hand side, the second he recovered back to his previous state in 12 hours.

The main thing is finding the cause and curing it to prevent it happening again.

Can vary a lot.

My grandad has had several and his mind is now in pieces unfortunately :(

but he has his good days as well :)

As people have already said they vary in severity so it's difficult to predict how much permanent damage they cause.

My Gran had one about six years ago which damaged her eyesight which in turn led to depression. My mum had one three years ago and that effected her balance and memory. She hasn't recovered and never will. My Gran had another one last year which left her all but blind. She's been in hospital for months and probably won't recover. My uncle also had one last year and lost all feeling in one side of his body and my Grandma had one a few weeks before Christmas which put her in hospital. She completely recovered and she's 89.

My family seem to be having a lot of strokes between them so I'm pretty much ****** when I'm older :(

Might be sensitive reading as I can understand that thinking of a loved one going through what you're reading can be upsetting, but this article explains it all from a medical viewpoint.

Once I forced myself to read all about MND, I found it easier to support and communicate with my Granddad, you might find the same about strokes.

Hope everything turns out ok. :)

Thank you i realy appreciate that...

I never updated you guys but following my nans stroke, she gradually got worse and sadly passed away in January. Styrokes are a lot worse than i thought, but from everything that happens you can learn something new, and i learnt that strokes are very serious in the medical world.

Damn, I'm sorry to hear that :(

I know a couple of people that have had strokes and it is a really nasty thing to happen.

Sorry to hear about that James07. I hope you and your family are ok.

Losing a close relative is something that i've been through a few times. Nothing can prepare you for it, but it does get easier over time. Having an understanding of the conditions that can affect us can help us to deal with it.

Anyhow, hope you're feeling ok

Im orite, theres times when it may hit me n i just sit and think for a while, but i guess im okay with it now, but i sent this thread when she had her stroke and i knew nothing about them and wanted to find out. But yeah she sadly died, peacefully, apparantly she took a last breath of air and gently exhaled and passed away, very sad, but lifes life and there isnt anything you can do, she suffered for like 4 years so.. shes resting now, thnks tho lads.

Sorry to hear that.

My uncle had one a few years back and he lost his speech and was basically a shadow of himself. But I got myself involved in the therapy teaching him to speak again using picture cards etc. A very slow process, but he has made a near full recovery and if you didn't know about the stroke, you would not be able to tell.

Amazing thing the brain, it can make miraculous recoveries from things like this.

Aye ano, my nan couldnt walk and lost her speech also, she gained parts of her speech, but could barely talk due to shortness of breath, so was a vicous circle, but she recovovered enough to speak. :)
