Struggling to find a good tyre in my size?

Hi,

When I had my previous car I had a good choice of cars available to me, usually opting for F1's. Since changing to the child safe, environmentally friendly car we have now my choices are somewhat limited.

It would appear 185,55,15 is not a popular size anymore and I'm struggling to find some decent rubber for the car. I don't drive particularly fast or hard but tyres have always been a number one concern for me.

Any suggestions of a decent tyre I can fit to my car in this size? Toyo seem the only real option to me?

Thank you.

185/55r15 -> 195/50r15 Loads of tyres in that size, seems to be a sweet spot for pricing too.
With this combination your speed will be 1.5% less than indicated.
When your speedo reads 30mph you will actually be doing 29.6mph.
When your speedo reads 60mph you will actually be doing 59.1mph.

Camskill do T1R in 195/50r15 for £30 a corner, seems to be a sweetspot for tyre size/price.

Hi,

I don't drive like a muppet but I'm a firm believer that you should fit the best tyres possible. Maybe I'm wrong but I always assumed that they weren't just about corners but also about how quickly you stopped!

The car in question is a 2005 Clio, and I know they're awful etc etc but it suits me just fine! I think 195 would rub and I wasn't aware you could fit bigger tyres than the originals?

at that size id be looking at going to 195/50/15

my brother actually that that size on a clio which he lowered a mile. no tyre issues

Hi

Thanks for the answers - they won't come off or something stupid if they are pushed hard either? Excuse my ignorance but I'm not really into this kind of stuff and thus am clueless.

Thanks for your help!

he drove his car like an absolute loon. his only issue came when he was waiting to exit a t junction and smoeone drove into the back of him

the tyres though were fine. that car must have been lowered 100mm, or more, no tyre clearance issues, but he managed to get decent tyres in that size, but not the original.

i cant see a reason against it tbh

Have a look for some Kumho KU31's, they are easily as good as any high end tyre and cost only a fraction of the price.

Can, worms, everywhere!

Its already been said but 195/50 R15 is the way forward. You say its 2005, is it late mk2 or an early mk3? Either way you will have no issues changing to that size.

Yea, furthermore I'm also very suprised at the limitation in higher end tyres in this tyre size. I was under the impression that most cars including performance cars had 15 inch wheels these days rather than the 17-19 inch wheels.

A lot of performance cars do have 15" wheels and even smaller :)

As said though 195/55/15 would increase your rolling circumference, you should go 195/50/15 if you're going to go wider and there is plenty of choice in performance tyres at this size.

The standard on my mk1 clio are 185 55 R15, but I've used 195 50 R15 for years now.

Unless your car is silly low, they won't scrub

I changed from 185/55/15 to 195/50/15 when I had the yaris, transformed the handling (though I was changing from worn Avons to brand new Yokos on all 4 corners) and gave me no issues at all.

Hi,

Its a late registered MK2, and from reading all your replies (which I appreciate) it looks as though I'm safe to get 195 50 15 and get them fitted then? This opens up a lot of choice and also another problem.

Do I get the new larger tyres fitted and swap the rear wheels to the front? I currently have toyo's on the rear and the front escapes me right now.

My theory is this -

Get new tyres and get them fitted (probably Eagle F1's unless anyone can suggest better). Ask the tyre fitter place to put 'new' tyres on the rear and move the current wheels to the front of the car. This would give me larger tyres on the rear, until I wear the fronts (ex rear) toyo's out. Would that be the way to do it?

Thank you again!

Spot on, best rubber goes on the back.

Where in Cornwall are you?
