I'm having adsl LLU installed. And I'm looking for a modem/router, however I'm lost as to which would be the right one.

1) It needs to be very stable, I cannot be rebooting it as I may not always be close.
2) It needs to be able to send magic packets via the internet to the local network for wake on lan - as some devices I intend to sleep when not in use.

DrayTek 2820 series would fit the bill pretty well.

Broadcom modem chipset so very stable and also will get a good sync out of any line.

Supports a lot of features that you may find handy, you could also VPN into it and then WOL that way (though the WubUI supports sending magic packets to any device that has had its IP address bound to a MAC in the router).

dg834g version 4 with dgteam firmware installed. Adjust the noise margin right down and get the max you can out of the line :)

I assume the dgteam firmware gives the wake on lan over the net features ?

The dg834gV4 is EOL and the V5 appears to have replaced it? would a V5 be as good ? Is the stability good with these ? - these are 1/3 the price of the draytek's so sound attractive.

Also The dg834g have a broadcom chipset - from reading it appears that this is advisable over other manufactures due to compatibility with equipment at the exchange. Is this reallly a issue ?

The other option (which I've ended up as) is to split the chain into an ADLS2+ modem (or good router in modem only mode), and use a Tomato or DD-WRT firmare on any of the very cheap/popular linux routers.

I personally have tried plenty of solutions, and currently ( a bit OTT), but use my old DG834N in modem mode with DGTeam firmware as my ADSL2+ modem, and a WRT54GL + Tomato as my router.

Since I use DDNS and other such frivolities, I do find the stability of feature set of the Tomato and DD-WRT firmwares to be quite refreshing.

I'm going away from all in one solutions, you always find one or the other is comprimised..
