Morning all!!

Have managed to pick up a second hand rig for a decent price and plan to use it for mining.

I'm reasonably familiar with building, stripping and rebuilding PC's, however this time round i've come across something i've never seen before.

I have a bootable W10 USB.
PC has a Gigabyte GA-X58a-UD3R Rev 2.0 mobo
Intel i7 930
Corsair 750w PSU
and a few other bits and pieces.
Whole pc was taken to bits, cleaned and rebuilt.
Only have 1 SSD connected (taken from a previous build and works fine)

When i boot the PC, i can access bios fine, i can see POST screen, BIOS sees the USB and SSD and all RAM sticks.
When i try to boot from USB, set the boot device priority to USB etc. the PC will bring produce a msg on screen reading:

Grub Loading
Welcome to Grub.
Error: unknown file system
Entering rescue mode...
Grub Rescue>

The person i bought it from has only said it ran kali linux previously and with a HDD should work absolutely fine.
I'm stuck lol.

Is there a simple step i'm missing?

Thanks for reading!

Have tried going via F12, produces same result.

The SSD was used as a temp drive for Chia plotting and still has really good health according to Crystal disk, will format and see if that helps me out.
Thanks for the input!

Thanks both, i wasn't sure if the Kali Linux OS the previous owner had installed would do something to RAM for example and/or somehow store settings which could have caused the issue.
Used the USB to boot and install W10 to my laptop the other week but for sanity sake i've just remade it on MCT so fingers crossed.

I don't think that board supports UEFI, so if the install USB is set to UEFI boot only that could be why it's not booting to it. Could also explains why it worked on your laptop if it's fairly recent and supports UEFI.

As above, use Rufus and then select the legacy BIOS option to create the right type of bootable drive for the board.

So, it turns out that someone who has never used Rufus, should really do a little research on it before trying to use it.....
What i had done is create a bootable USB through Rufus, without any form of OS on it at all, just literally a blank drive formatted to be bootable :D

Sorted the boot drive, run windows, install works fine.
During set up phase where i get the intro to Cortana, PC turns off. no warnings, no codes, no BSOD, no beeps. nothing, PC powers down and i have to physically turn PC back on again.
Over the course of 3-4 attempts, it powers off seemingly at random.

Would i be right in thinking that i've either got a faulty PSU or some form of overheating issue going on?
Les inclined to think its overheating and more to do with dying PSU.

The only physical changes i've made are installing 2 x R9 270's (taken from a smaller working machine) an extra 120mm fan and 3 more 2gb DDR3 sticks.
Removed the ram, same issue. removed the fan, same issue, remove 1 GU, same issue.

difficult for anyone to diagnose by someone else's text, but, would i appear to be on the right track?
Currently waiting for delivery of new PSU in the hope thats the cause lol
