Computer 1: Windows 7, no DVD drive.

Computer 2: Windows XP, DVD Drive.

Both on the same network. I have shared the DVD Drive on the XP machine, but the Windows 7 PC just can't see the XP machine at all (nevermind the drive) it even although it has discovery on. Both are on the WORKGROUP network it seems. Disabled firewall on XP PC temporarily to see if it was that, but no.

Any ideas? Struggling big time.

Cheers

For XP there is an option under the control panel/admin panel that you need to enable that allows your XP machine to be visible. do a quick search on the net for it :-)

Thanks lads.

iDroid. I just right clicked the drive and shared it. I've tried the same thing with my home setup (desktop Win 7, XP laptop) and it worked perfectly without any hitch. God knows what the problem is with the work one.

Scougar, I had a good google, but can't see anything on that.

A lot of people seem to have problems with the permission to access the shared resource. I can't even see the shared computer on the network, very strange.

Have you enabled File and Printer sharing on the Windows XP machine? You can do this via the network setup wizard in control panel, also you might want to disable simple file sharing in XP too, so it asks you for a username and password for when you connect to the PC.

Will give it a go, thanks.

Thing is, I emulated the exact process I followed on my home network and it worked as it should :( Computers grrrr :)

He may want to share many different disks though...

I'm pretty certain that by default, one of the options in the administrative console section is set to not display PC's on a network, and that feature needs to be switched on (Even after the "File and printer sharing" option has been ticked. I'm trying to find it for you at the moment.

You're probably right Scougar. I spent 15 minutes on it today then gave up. So, I just plugged an old IDE DVD drive into the motherboard and installed off that. Job done.

Oh, and don't get me started on exporting Outlook Express mail database to Outlook :D FYI, best way to do it is to install Outlook on existing PC, do an Express > Outlook upgrade, export Outlook backup, import that on new PC.

Cheers for all the posts, appreciate folk trying to help.

Another option..

Make an ISO of the disc with IMGburn, install Virtual Clonedrive and mount the image (both 100% freeware)
