Struggling with upgrade!

I require some assistance. I've got 2 upgrade paths on the table and really not sure which one to go for.

The first upgrade is x79, 3820, asus x79 and 16gb quad channel RAM. I do love the idea of going Intel but the otherside of me is saying stick with AMD, get a new motherboard and get a 8350 or wait for steamroller.

I have the money to do either, but cannot make my mind up. There difference between then is a lot, but each have their plus points.

Ideas?

Intel wise, the 1155 is going to become redundant soon with the release of Haswell, however the 2011 socket has the Ivybridge-e coming out at the end of the year. In terms of AMD, I'm still at my Phenom and find it fantastic, however their CPU's don't seem to be pushing the boat out in comparison. Although, I do enjoy my AMD stuff very much.

If I had to upgrade today, I would be heading down the 2011 route or waiting for Haswell. Have a check in the £1000 build thread, I have some builds posted, I don't want to spam post it 3 times. :p

I would go Intel mate, AMD have had long enough to up their game in my opinion...

Thanks Gents!

This is how my mind works ok!

Now I've been thinking about the 1155 socket and what the advantages would be over getting it apart from the price and the fact it's not going to be supported.

Putting aside the fact that 1155 is dead, which choice, in terms of performance & value for money, would be the better option.

i7 3770k:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £269.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77X-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £112.99
1 x Patriot Intel Extreme Masters 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-14900C10 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (PVI316G186C0K) £89.99
Total : £484.37 (includes shipping : £9.50).

The reason I've been looking at this is due to my photo-editing & the occassional video endoding as well as my main use of gaming, it would be a great strong chip and I would expect it to last a good number of years. Yes, there would be no upgrade path.

or the i7 2011:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3820 3.60GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail with Dead Space 3 PC Game £239.99
1 x Asus P9X79 Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard £199.99
1 x Patriot Intel Extreme Masters 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C11 2133MHz Quad Channel Kit (PVI316G213C1QK) £109.99
Total : £561.37 (includes shipping : £9.50).

This is also a good option and there would be an upgrade path, but would it be needed? It's more power hungry, expensive & would think it would run hotter, not sure if this it true or not.

As above, putting aside 1155 being dead, is the additional expense worth it? I cannot hang on for Haswell, prices are too expensive and feeling like I need to upgrade NOW!

You'd need to add a cooler to the 2011 build.....unless you already have a cooler that is compatibubble

I already have the cooler & everything else, just looking to replace the CPU, mobo & RAM. From what I can see, the 3770k performs better than the 2011.

Undecided and I'm pulling my hair out!!!

lol snips i really feel your pain im in the same boat, i want a new cpu mobo and ram too for my birthday in july and cant make my mind up, i like to plan in advance i know its a bit early. Was going to go with a whole keep what i've got and come with a big wad but upgradeing as i go seems to make more sence. Have you made your mind up? I was going to do amd and hope the steemroler is good, then decided nah sod it intel are king these days so was gonna get an i5 1155 till i just read this and heard the 1155's pretty much getting sacked off -_- Non the ruddy wiser.

Wow sorry to rant on a bit :@

It's killing me to be fair. I've got 2 baskets here, one with the 1155 and the other with the 2011. Price difference is £52. The 3770k looks phenomenal as a chip and the 2011 is slightly slower but has an upgrade path for the future. Both has +/- points and both really appeal. Leaning to 2011 for the potential of the hex-core, but stumped.

For me i still think the 1155 is a valid option i mean a good 1155 setup will still give a good few years? Or so im hoping lol. I do love the idea of going 2011 it does seem more beefy, but to drop 270 on a cpu then be looking to upgrade it again fairly soon makes me uncomfortable and feel like im throwing money away. This amd athlon has to go tho its pathetic.

Edit. WOO! 250th post free postage ahoey!

I'm planning on keeping the 3820 for a good 24 months then by that time, the Ivy-E would have been out for a good year for the prices to drop. You'll still be putting loads into the 1155 anyway. The i5k is £200 and the i7k is £270. The 3820 is £240. Mobo £200 & RAM for £89. Not far off a good 1155 setup. Don't forget, the 2011 allows x16/x16 if you SLI/xFire. Dont get many 1155 boards which allow the same.

You have to be registered for 3 months to get free postage!

Trying to think of the reason why I didnt get that board, but looked at it longingly. Ahh...think it was due to only having 4 memory banks, wanted 8 for the potential of 32gb. Looking at this one instead.

Thats a sexy board! I dont think i'll ever need that much ram lol. Mines literaly a games machine nothing else, dont even listen to music or browse much internet on it, come down on the laptop for all that haha.

If i had the money i'd of got this because well look for yourself :P http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-372-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2174 But a bit over my budget lol

Need more RAM slots. HAHA - Love the heatsink on that southbridge.

I dont really get your logic snips. Look at the 2500K and the 3570K, the 2500K is older but isn't cheaper. Buying second hand is the only real way to get a bargain. If you want the hexcore then save for it ;)

Haswell isn't going to be a massive leap forwards. The IGP looks much better (Quicksync will like that), lower power consumption and slightly more ooompf. If you can't wait then fair enough.....

Is there much info on the up and coming ivybridge-e? I'd not even heard about it till coming here? I new about the haswell but from what i read there wont be a massive jump in performance anyway. (The source could always be wrong however) I do love the mass options of the 2011 boards theres so many! You seen this thing yet? YOUR BASKET

A bit over the top lol, still would love to see a build with this at the heart!

The logic is all around depreciation, I'm sure you well aware of it! Yes the market favours Intel, but as long as there is a competitor in the market, AMD, there is never going to be a 0% chance unfavourable market conditions will affect people purchasing their products.

It's not all about not being able to wait. I don't see Haswell being a benefit to me in the long run. The architecture of the 2011 as well as the quad-channel RAM will give my photo editing & occasional encoding a massive boost. Also, does it work purchasing 2 dual channel kits for quad?

I have seen it, however, loads of people have pointed out the same thing, a 3870/3770k overclocked will run rings around the 2 xeons you plug into that thing.

I'm so undecided, lets go with a hypothetical situation. Say I go with the 3770k as below:

1 x Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £269.99

I've chosen this board as it's got 4 6gb sata III ports as I'll eventually have another 2 drives to add. 16gb RAM incase I need another 16gb.

Would you make any changes?
