Hey guys/gals.

I'm a pickle in my wee little life. I currently awaiting a date to start the army, however, I'm running out of money to live... I'm not sure what I'm entitled too.

Here is the science:

I only work 18hrs a week.

But I'm paying full rent a month and council tax which seen as my hours have been dropped = more outgoings that incoming.

I'm only contracted part time 16hrs.

Am i wasting my time working 18hrs a week?

A big cash injection can come in the form of a tax rebate.... maybe see if you are due one. You could ask your place of work for more hours? or to increase your basic hours

How hard would it be to get another job that could fit in around your current hours?

Have yo thougth about a personal loan that you can pay off in one lump sum (i.e. when you join the army you can pay it all off after your first pay check)

What is your relationship with parents, other relatives or friends, could you loan some money from them?

Could be worth phoning up the council to see what you would be entitled to on the dole, but don't expect much, you are a young male that is due to start long term work and no dependants.

Yeh, i'm thinking of going to citizens advice...

It's almost impossible to find work without going through agency and that would probably leave me no better off hours wise for the first few month if anything.

No money from parents ha. worse off than me. And no thanks on the loan.

I thought maybe I could get help towards rent, housing benefits? or possibly all of it paid and council tax paid with the dole with a bit extra weekly? But would I have to get laid off for that?

The army date could be April - ? so it's short term/long term... really annoying

Are you able to move back in with your parents for any amount of time? It's what I did for two months prior to me joining up because I couldn't afford my flat, my job wasn't paying enough, and I couldn't find work else where. Was good to spend some time with my family actually, just before going off to basic training.

Also, what trade you going for? Try getting on to your AFCO, see if you can get an earlier start date or something, explain your situation.

It's not like I haven't looked for other work or more, it's not like I can find a job tomorrow.

Even if I move back home, I have rent to pay for every month til June, I need incoming money home or here.

I'm going to my AFCO for the latest tomorrow, but It's not for them to do anything about it :) I'm going Royal Engineers, so trade jobs have long queues, I've been waiting since October and started the whole application last June.

I was just expecting to get away for April, not a case of not actually getting a date til April if you get me.

I think I'm probably best off going to citizens advice and explaining the whole thing, hopefully they can tell me of some sort of benefit I can apply for...

there must be something, I'm probably better off not working for a few month that work and not actually be able to afford life for a few month

Are you in the scummiest house available?

Are you parents truly worse off than you? Have you talked to them about the situation? And what about friends?

Why so quick to write off the loan? It isn't such a bad thing if you find the right one. Only use it for rent and food if you have to, pay off the minimum, and then when you get some decent dollar coming in pay it off as quickly as possible.

Just in case, have you made sure you got the single persons discount on your council tax? check your bill.

I didn't get mine for 4 years despite sending in a claim and got a rebate for overpayment along with a reduced bill.

Because I can't be in too much debt joining the army.

My dad is bankrupt and my mam already gives me what she can monthly which I feel bad for taking.

I'm currently sharing student house with 4friends, but they aren't going to just lend me a couple of hundred so I can be comfortable for a couple of month for me to pay them back sometime whenever

Have you thought about finding a room that is being let. I can't imagine student housing being the cheapest tbh.

Are you able to get a room on an army base, or are you not officially a member of the army yet?

Not officially in the army yet, just waiting for them to tell me when I goto Basic training.

I'm already in a contract for this house til June, so have to pay til June.

I suppose I'm best going to citizens advice. I know I can get 25% off council tax, even though that makes no difference, but I'm certain I can apply for low income support or housing benefits

Why can't you move back in with parents and pay for your own food. I don't see why you should have to pay rent seen as your parents wouldn't be put under any more finiancial stress, perhaps just pay for any increase in electric and water gas, which would be minimal.

I would move home and still be having to pay the remainder of the rent in a house I'm not living in.

If I move home I'd have to leave my job, therefore no money in whatsoever so it would be impossible for me to pay the remainder of my rent

Would it be detrimental to your army app to be classed as bankrupt? If you don't have anything then you just can't pay for your rent. If it is detrimental then you obviously have no option than to pay for the rent in some way.

Are you living off tesco value noodles?

Do a sponsered run or something for charity but keep the money for yourself without anyone else knowing?
