Stuck at motherboard screen after installing GTX 1070

hey guys,

probably going to be something really stupid but I'm having trouble with the GPU I just bought. I'm switching from an old 7950HD and after uninstalling the old drivers with the amd removal tool, I took the card out and put the new one in. Now, when I switch the PC on everything powers up but it just freezes at the motherboard screen. I know the motherboard is fine because my old card still works fine so it must be something to do with the new one.

My specs:
Ga Z77-D3H rev 1.0 version F16
Intel i5 3570k @ 3.8ghz
16GB RAM @ 1866mhz
GTX 1070 OC Armor
Corsair CX600w

The card itself powers on but I can't do anything and after a couple minutes the monitor switches off. I assumed it would be the PSU not big enough but apparently 500w could just barely cut it so surely my 600w is fine? I've seen quite a few previous posts suggested a bios update but I've no clue how to do this or even if it would help me so any advice would be appreciated, I'm getting pretty desperate!

edit: just found the radeon settings app is running but i can't uninstall it because it's apparently in use, not sure if that's related
also sorry if this is in the wrong place i'm not too sure where to post
