Stuck handbrake!?

Last night after I finished work and started driving home I noticed the handbrake was stuck and I couldn't disengage it. The lever would move but there would be no resistance whatsoever, its like the cable has caught or something. As you can imagine driving home wasn't nice.

At first I thought that it might be due to the cold weather freezing the cable in place or something but it is the same today :(

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Cheers.

Happens a lot on mk1s, i'm guessing the mk2 isn't much different.

At the caliper end of the handbrake cable there should be a rubber boot to protect the cable, once this splits/gets perished etc water gets into the cable which then freezes on cold mornings seizing it.

Ok, thanks. I will have a look at that tomorrow. On the way into work it was nowhere near as bad as last night. I have left it in gear today at work/
