Stuck - Oblivion: Whom Gods Annoy

Hi

I'm up to this part: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Whom_Gods_Annoy

It won't let me place the staff on the altar for some reason, when I approach the later the little icon for action does not appear, has anyone else done this part and know what I need to do please?

You should see a message pop up that says something along the lines of "Here's the altar, now to get rid of that damn staff" once you get within a certain distance from it.

Once you get that, you can *drop* the staff. You don't have to place it anywhere or use it or interact with anything else... simply drop the staff [shift-click]!

Strange that, cause I have been all around that area where the altar is and the statue etc and no message appears.

You don't wait for a message, you simply have to go into the menu with the equipment and drop the staff.

Usually to do this you are prompted to press space bar so you can select and drop from your inventory. How do you just drop this object then?

must have loaded up the game so many times now, try all sorts and still no message or anything allows me to drop the staff on the altar, perhaps I've not done something yet!

just walk close to the alter
open inventory
drop the sodding staff.

What does it say in your quest journal? (perhaps you missed one of the steps in the quest?) like others have said you shld just need to select it from your inventory then drop it near the altar. I killed all the enemies nearby first, have you done that? However first time i tried this i had to run around near the altar trying to find enough space for the staff to drop (kept coming up there wasnt enough space). But then i got the message to drop it so no worries. Have you walked ALL OVER that area? Maybes theres some kind of trigger for the message.

How do I drop the sodding staff?

Surfer: going to try now, everything in that cave is dead but I will go into the other ones and clear the place out see if it triggers anything.

Shift-click it in the inventory.

it could be a bug.. it's not unknown.

i'm sure the only requirement is just getting to the altar, if the shift+click method fails to drop the item from the inventry then it's got to be a bug i'd say.

edit: if it is a bug, it can be got around.. but we wont go there 'till it's the last resort.

Good news, the shift click in inventory worked, and the message popped up saying he placed the item near the altar. I didn't know about this action, sorry to seem stupid!! lol. Thanks for all the help you guys!

another method to drop is to just click and hold an item, give the mouse a little wiggle, the inventry menu should close and leave the item in your 'grab' grip. this is handy for dropping things with care, as sometimes dropping things on unflat ground can see them fall through the floor.
