Stuck on first car to get?

Do you care about what others think you look like in your car??
In a word, yes, of course. Aesthetics are a big deal for some and the image of your car is definitely appropriate. Apologies if my statement was offensive given the fact that you own a Saxo (i'm sure it's great!), but given the amount of similarities small cars have, i'm not about ready to have a Saxo quite yet. Call it what you will. :)

Punto over 106, have a look at Mondeo, right gotcha chris. I'm not about ready to get a Ford though, given the fact that i'm after something a bit, well, more attractive. I think what will be the most important factor here is what is available and for what price. I've learnt the basic value of a small car now and what I currently have available to me, so with that in mind, it should'nt be too long before I snap one up.

A car will always have its fanbase and the pro's or con's will outweigh from one users experience to another, so I think the most important thing for me to focus on is whether I actually like the car or not. Whether it is a better drive or not is surely personal preference foremost and car build, durability, quality, etc being the latter.

Thanks again you lot.

I was snobby about what car I was seen in, I drove a brand new BMW Mini for 6 months before I got mine. I tried a few cars but my image concerns went straight out of the window when I test drove my Saxo. It handles like no other car I have driven before.

I'm still saying 306 2.0 HDi or 306 1.9 DT 3 door.

Nice cars.

If you want to spend more than £3k, then the words Ford & Focus come to mind.

A the end of the day, its your choice, you wont go away and think about it. You cant buy a punto because some guy on the forum said it was rubbish, or a saxo is too boy racer, or mondeo because its a ford, it has to be what you want.

If I were you, I would pop along to a few garages, and test drive the cars you would like to own, and been recommended on here
Punto
Saxo
106
306
fiesta
mondeo
etc

Make sure you drive them, not just around the car park, or town and dont get out of 3rd gear, you want to be able to give it a good run.

Then make your mind up, you may be surprised and love the fiesta, or even the 306.

What type of driving will you be doing, and how many miles are you likely to cover?

I'll be driving around 40-45miles a day going too and from uni on the Acle straight and up the A146 to Norwich (20 miles each way). So it'll mainly be motorways but i'll probably be driving around Norwich a lot too as i'll usually stay and see a few mates, have dinner in the city or go to band practice and such.

Well i would be wanting a bigger car, with bigger engine, but thats just me. having gone from mondeo, to clio for a longish journey, the mondeo was much better.

Just test drive and see what you think.

2k will net you a decent 1.6 mitsubishi colt mirage, looks better and is more reliable than most other small cars of this price range. Just hard to find the buggers :p

i have a W reg Fiat punto, had it just under a year now and spent over £900 on repairs, only done 60k miles. It's a pile of sh!te avoid them mate!

16,000 miles, 2 previous owners, I guess it's okay. :D
16000 miles in 6 years?

Christ, that's spent its whole life being tottered to work with Chantelle slipping the clutch for 3 miles a day.

Find one that's been used or it'll start complaining when you actually warm it up and drive it properly...

Okay, this car seems to be the one after a tiring, almost gruelling search. Just need the all clear from you lot. Pricewise, how much should I be looking at a max?

I'm thinking £1,700, but i'm just never certain with these things.

Saxo VTR would be far more fun to drive than a Festa 1.25.

Tried Fiesta 1.6 Zetec S?

Oh, and Fiesta's may be reliable, but they rust.

what have u been smoking, cheapest i found insurance on that on for me and im 17 passed in august was £2k itself, and then a decent VTR about another £3k on top of that. My honnest opinion, look for fiestas liek other people have sed, a Zetec will shift, but is a higher insurance group. Corsa's are good little run arounds as are 106's.

Your insurance will depened on the crime rate aroudn the area where u live as well as other factors, mite find it cheaper to go on your mums insurance although you wont build no claims, unless ** with direct line and all that malarky...

also avoid that civic, its got alloys, and from the looks of it and an induction systems, probaly and exhuast system too, i didnt bother to read on...

most insurance companies wont touch you with a modified car, and if they will they'l sting you for every penny you have. Best bet find a car you like with a small engine 1.2/1.4, if you can get it alarmed and then maybe put some decent speakers and a sub n amp in the boot if your into that kind of thing.

My friend had all his stuff knicked out of his car whilst we were at skl about £400 worth, hence the alarm.

Mines all bolted down now :D
