Hi all,

I can't seem to work this one out.

I've just built a new system and installed Windows XP. The first thing I'd like to do is install my motherboard drivers, but when I try from the CD I get:

"The application failed to initiate properly (0xc0000006). Click on ok to terminate the application"

It does this when I try and install video drivers too. Nothing executable seems to work. Furthermore, I can't get on the internet without installing the ethernet drivers for the motherboard.

Any ideas?

Edit: Just tried burning the ethernet driver to a cd and running it in the new pc. Error says:

"Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed"

The only thing I've done in the bios is set the date and time and the boot priority.

I did manage to update the chipset drivers by putting them on a floppy disk to transfer them, however not many things are the size of a floppy disk.

You can't copy executable files from the CD drive to run from the hard drive either. It says: "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

Ok, so the installation seemed to go ok, but its only afterwards that its doing this?

Ok, that means that the cables etc should be ok.

I still say to have done with, go into the BIOS, and SETUP DEFAULTS is what you need, and re-try, then see where you get.

No change unfortunately :(

I'm running memtest at the moment. No problems reported so far.

All sorted now :D

It turns out it was a cable issue. Asus provided 2 IDE ribbon cables with the mobo. One labelled HD cable and one labelled CD-ROM cable. How silly of me to use the CD-ROM cable to connect my optical drive. Switched to the HD cable and it works fine :D . In the manual, one is referred to as an Ultra DMA cable, the other an Ultra ATA cable. Didn't realise there was any difference before now. It seems XP could install ok over the wrong cable because all it did was extract files to the hard drive and run them from there. When everything was installed I could access the DVD drive fine and open simple txt and html files from CDs, it just wouldn't run any executables.

Thanks to all those who replied to help me out. It is very very much appreciated
