Hi all,

I am sorting out the internet in our yes at uni next year, now I have seen that some companies to 9 month contracts (BT) but they only do up to 36mb. We have 7 of us in our house and I'd rather get faster internet than that.

However the only faster contracts I can find are for 18 months.

Does anyone know of a way to get (or a company that does) a faster contract for 9/12 months?

Thanks

If Virgin Media are available, the deals can be found here with speeds that go up to 152Mb/s. But, they seem rather pricey.

According to the BT ads i've been watching.........................don't students just gatecrash the flat next door and use the BB there ? :p

Sadly virgin media is not available

Us?! Students?! 'Borrowing' internet? nooooo :p

Seriously though, any ideas?! I'm currently trying to explain to one housemate why we need line rental despite the fact her 'friend says you definitely don't need line rental, it is not a necessity just a scam' :o

Tell her to sort it out then.

In all fairness, 36Mb should be enough shouldn't it? Streaming takes circa 2Mb per stream so if all of your were to stream on 2 devices it should still be enough.

Just make sure you get a router that has good QOS so you can make sure you can shape it to perform how you NEED it to. I.E low priority for torrents and higher priority for important stuff (like your PC)

Was much tougher back in my day when we had to debate who got the phone extension to dial up at 56k to check their email!

I'd go with the 37mb it should be enough provided you are all reasonable human beings, if you living with some irritating torrent addicts who download the entire contents of the interent on a daily basis then there is little you can do except by a really good router and restrict them as otherwise no matter how quick the connection they will jam it solid.

Other option is ring round plenty of companies will offer you stuff thats not listed on the website if they get a new customer sale just expect it to be pricey for a short term deal!

Virgin did up to 60mb 9 month student package. Which honestly I didn't like due to congestion problems in my area. The upload is pretty slow as well, which didn't help as most of us started to rely on cloud storage for university work.

Student areas are notoriously bad with Virgin media because of the massive usage you get from multiple people of the "digital age" on a single connection, multiplied by however many student houses in the covered area. FTTC rather than VM's cable works differently so is less prone to massive problems of congestion in built up student areas.

Plus as mentioned above, cable broadband has extremely limited upstream to share around, so that makes it even worse as people are uploading to the cloud more and more.
