Hi all,

I have been looking around for my wife's brother who has just started university, and had a budget of up to £600 for a laptop that would not only allow him to do uni work, but also be able to play the latest games.

I am after a custom laptop as they seem to offer more than brand names.

And started to build the laptop, the price comes just under £600 inc VAT.

The build has the following, any feedback would be much appreciated:

Screen size: Full HD (1920X1080)

CPU: I7 -3610 2.30Ghz

RAM: 8 GB 1600Mhz DDR3

Graphics card: NVIDIA Geforce GT 635 (they also offer 640, but I am not too sure how much difference that will make for gaming, slightly over the budget)

Disk: 500GB WD SCORPIO SATA 3gb 16MB Cache

Total Price: £597

Based on the spec, especially the graphics card, will he be able to play the latest games for some time to come?

Rgds,

First off, you'll need to remove the link to the competitor.

As for the laptop, with that card at that resolution you'll be able to play most current games at a mix of low and medium settings at best really. Less intensive games you'll be able to ramp up the settings a but more obviously. Spending a bit more money on the GPU, if possible, will make a big difference to the gaming performance.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice (link and laptop).

The highest spec i can get for that custom build is 640M, which I beileve is the same as 635 apart from the memory coming in at 2GB.

Would you recommend 640 over 635? will it make that much difference?

Thanks.

Rgds,

The 640m is a fair bit above the 635m.

635M - 144 cores
640M - 384 cores

It's still very much midrange card though, so don't expect full details on recent games, especially at 1080p.
