Going back to Uni in a few weeks and need to sort out BB for the house share.

NTL lines are there, not sure about BT.

Who is the best all round provider (student focused would be great).

Thanks

My brother is getting Virgin 2mb on its own for £10 a month. They offer is off their website, but i think they can still do it over the phone.

Bear in mind that as standard, Virgin Media have a 12 month contract, so you could potentially be paying for 3 months you're not there.
They used to do student deals with a 9 month contract though, but you'll need to phone them (or they'll have a salesdroid hanging around somewhere, expect to be up to your neck in leaflets for the first month).

It's not ideal, but it's either that or really expensive ADSL or ADSL that cuts out completely when you hit the limit (or they charge you excessive amounts per GB after set limits etc)

There isn't much way round the subject of 12 month contracts really, BT have now upped their line rental packages to 12 month only so you can't even be connected for a couple of months. I rang up recently to connect my house and their reasoning is to stop people from signing up with BT only to change to a different provider now. Can't say that is fair considering we have no choice if NTL/Virgin aren't in our area.

If you go with a BT line (they currently do line rental for £11.50) and Be internet if they're in your area. Then at least the be internet isn't contracted apart from you have to give 3 months notice of leaving.

they arnt too good for downloading a lot as they will cut your speed if you do. Perhaps not the best for a house of students..
They're great for downloading a lot, you just do it outside the times when you're going to get throttled, ie. not between 4pm and 12am.

But if your students its likely there is what 4 of you in the house at least if its a shared flat? if just one of you downloads in peak times and goes over your all goan get throttled.

Split between 4 its not much.

theres 6 of us. I rememebr NTL hanging round the Uni gates every year last year offering 9 months at £9.99 a month. I think I'll play it by ear at the start of term
