I avoided A09 due to it bricking some peoples motherboards!

Can't find much on google if A11 is good to go and if it makes the fan spin up a little earlier to maintain cool idle temps instead of thrashing it every few mins when things get hot like it currentlly is...

Updated the BIOS on my sister's Studio 1555 over the weekend before a complete wipe and reinstall of Vista 64. Can't remember what version from/to though, but it is working fine. The thing that I found that managed temperatures most effectively were upgrading to the latest ATI Catalyst Mobility drivers from AMD, and installing the latest Intel chipset drivers (not the RST ones, the other ones).

how do you install the latest ATI drivers for laptops?
I know how to do it for nvidia via laptopvideo2go.com where you modify one of the files (forget which).
Is there a similar system for ATI? if you go through their driver support page it takes you to dell again..

and dell hardly ever update the video drivers with any regularity...
might try the BIOS update after exams, even on a laptop cooler the fan is off then ON again when things get hot:( no mid-range

Go to ATI's website and download the ATI Mobility Radeon ones. :)

Yeah, I was confused on this too, as downloading the mobility ones only gave a ~1.5mb file instead of the ~70mb file I was expecting! However, running the small file then starts a download process thing. No idea why it is different to the desktop Catalyst download.

well I tried mobility modder which modified the file and installed to latest CCC (10.4) but checked the display driver and it was still the older dell one:(
I'll have another look at the ati site...

RIGHT i've had success with ati's site now, up to date driver:)

Will do BIOS update after exams...
