I've got a Studio 1737 laptop with 4Gb RAM and 32bit operation system and I want more RAM!

So can you put more than 4Gb memory in this laptop (ignoring the 32bit operating sytem for now), the manual says not but I've just been googling and some people reckon that you can have 8Gb.

A slight side issue; my vista system specs say I have 4Gb RAM but I thought 32bit systems could only access about 3-3.5. Is it just telling me what is physically installed as opposed to what is actaully availabe to use?

I'm going to upgrade to windows 7, does the disk come with 32bit and 64bit versions on it?

I've looked on a site that has an excellent memory advisor tool that says it can only take 4Gb.
However as you've said there are a few threads saying it *should* be able to take 8gb if it has the series-45 chipset (check using CPU-Z).

There is no definite answer so you may just have to take a leap of faith with it, or get a new laptop....

The memory reporting was changed in Vista to the amount of memory installed rather than how much Windows can actually use.

I believe that a retail copy of Windows comes with 2 disks, a 32bit one and a 64bit.
However, you cannot upgrade from Vista 32bit to Windows 7 64bit, you have to reinstall from scratch. (32bit to 32bit will work though)

Thanks for that. A new laptop isn't really a route I want to go down. Maybe I'll just stick with 4Gb.

If I was to stick with 4Gb, is it really worth changing to a 64bit system? Or is it more hassle than it's worth? I don't really want to do a clean install of windows.
