Am looking to insulate a rather large room and have no idea where to start with materials/techniques.

Curious to know if anybody else has some advise and experience they'd like to share?

Only theoretical knowledge here (touched on it at uni). First place to start would be to calculate your room modes and standing waves for your particular room so that you know what problematic frequencies you've got to deal with. There's some really good articles/calculators around online. Sound On Sound is a great source of info on this and I used to use Bob Golds room calculator.

Edit: Ignore me, I thought you meant acoustic treatment for some reason. Obviously still recovering from New Years...

There are 1-2 people who frequent the Home Cinema & Hi-Fi section who are knowledgeable on the subject and/or professionals in that industry. I haven't really seen them post in this section much.

I've given a hand on a couple of builds but not something I have a working knowledge on other than knowing it can be quite complex and surprising what can transmit sound.

The reason I linked to the easyrider thread is that there was someone in there (Lowe) who operates and has built, professional recording studios and is apparently happy to give advice.

Are you looking to tackle room acoustics or sound proof the room so it won't annoy the neighbours?

The two are entirely different.
