can it be true is it possible to plug a PCIe 1. card into a spare PCIe slot and if so what configuration problems might occur?
 
that sucks i bought my new mobo simply because it had a pcie 1 slot above the gpu cooler if only i could turn back time :(
 
Most motherboards will have a PCI-E 1x slot. Position will vary.

For reference you can put any PCI-E sized card in any slot as long as it fits.

1x into 16x. 4x into 8x, 1x into 8x etc but obviously not the other way around.

Slightly confused by the question here. You had a spare slot, but then you bought another motherboard with a slot? Do you mean a physically 1x card into say... a physically 16x slot ? If so, as Sin Chase says.. no issues.

Actually, with an open ended slot you can put a 16x card (say GPU) into a 1x, 4x, or 8x slot.

I've got a Radeon HD5450 sat here in a 1x slot because I needed a 2nd GPU in my machine at work. Open ended PCIe connector :cool:
 
Yeah but it's worth noting a 16x/8x/4x card operating at x1 may be bandwidth starved.

Also another thing is that some full length PCI-E x16 slots are electrically only 8x or 4x, you can tell my looking at the pins inside the slot they will only go half way if it's electrically 8x and a quarter if electrically 4x, I think these type of slots are more popular than the open ended ones. For example, most (if not all) LGA1155 motherboards have a second PCI-E 16x slot that is electrically only 8x.

yeah i agree.. I put a SAS Card into a 8x PCIe on machine i was working on and got extremely poor peformance (12 x Intel 520 Series SSD RAID 0) after checking the motherboard specs it was 8 x mechanical but only 4 x electrical and PCIe Gen1. When i put it into another 16x PCIe gen 2 slot it was a massive improvement.
