stupid and easy question

Depends on what resolution you use. Most games can be forced somehow to accommodate widescreen resolutions, and most new and recent games have widescreen support natively. That said, many still don't, which is quite shocking. I think it was FEAR that didn't even have 1280x1024 as a standard resolution.

Check out which games support widescreen and which don't-

TBH pretty much everything I've played that was released in the last few years supports or can be made to run in widescreen.

Whether the monitor will stretch the screen horizontally or show black bars when using a non-widescreen resolution depends on the screen. The cheaper screens will only stretch, the better ones give you a choice. If you have an nvidia card, the card itself can provide aspect ratio scaling where you get the bars.

Are you thinking of BF2? Pretty sure Fear always supported 1280*1024 and it supports native widescreen too now.
