I used to play football ALL the time from the ages of 5-16. Since then i stopped playing and did other things (squash/gym/badminton etc). I'm 20 now and I joined a team in the summer, but after a few training sessions I twisted my left ankle. I rested it for a few weeks, went back to training and did it again, it was as if the slightest slip would cause it to twist or whatever. I kinda gave up then but recently we've been having kick abouts over the local astro turf and I can feel my ankle waiting to go again (both ankles). Are my ankles simply weak and not used to being worked so hard or what?

Can anyone reccommend somewhere to purchase ankle supports, and reccomend any decent atsro turf trainers? And if anyone has any advce of any exercies I can do to strengthen them i'd be grateful.

Strengthening

Hey

I was informed (by an ex-Crystal Palace trainee) that the club used to tye a small bag of sugar to each side of the ankle and make them walk around for a period time each day. This apparently strengthens the ankle making it less likely to fail.

Bearing in mind this came from a CPFC reject, im not sure how reliable this information is. :p I simply wear an ankle support on both legs, because my left ankle used to go all the time. I have played two seasons now without problems.

Hope this helps

cant find the URL because the argos site isn't working at my end, but they sell york ankle supports for 5.99. As i need two and these aren't too expensive, would they be good enough?

Looked at the vulkan ones but the general price was around £15 for one

ive got the same problem.. Its getting better after just getting some strength in it.. I used a support for a bit, but i found that getting strength helps more. Maybe rest for a month and keep getting some strength into it?

Ripper,

some physio advice: Right basically you will contine to go over your ankle if you dont do any Proprioceptive exercises... what are these? they are balance exercises, i.e. standing on uneven surfaces, standing on one leg while transfering your weight from side to side, Get a wobble board... stand on it with 2 legs, then work down to one while supporting your body weight,

You need to prehaps see a physio, to get you started in the right direction...
those straps are good for short term recoverly, but you dont want to continue to go over your ankle for the rest of your life and your ligaments never repair or return to their natural/original state

S7 ;)
