Stupid question easily answered...

Hadn't understood the difference between gigabit and ADSL routers - do now, thanks!

Looked at the Billion 7800N, but I need something with USB ports supporting print server and storage. Also have a big house and many walls to cover - the Asus seems to perform well there. Any recommendations?

Not sure why PistolPete mentioned gigabit. He probably meant cable. Anything with an RJ45 WAN port is usually referred to as a cable router.

Ok, cable.. :)

As I say, I need the 2 usb ports for print server and storage. The Asus looks very tempting. Does the modem make much difference to the performance? If so, any recommendations for something decent (and not too expensive)?

You must have a built in modem if you are running off of an ADSL connection. If you have a cable connection like Virgin Media then you do not need a modem built in at all.

No, I meant Gigabit as it's an Gigabit ethernet router - not a cable router.
Plus the description is a giveaway ;-)

"Asus RT-N56U Black Diamond Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router".

yes, but that 'cable router' above can also be used as a asdl router, so I was wondering what you were trying to say.

It can be used with a separate ADSL modem, yes. You need to be careful how you approach the subject or you'll confuse people.
