On the desktop, when you right click, select View and then deselect "Align Icons to Grid" why does windows never remember this setting and I have to manually select it every time I start windows??

I could probably find out with google but wanted to know if anyone here knew what the problem was before I spend hours looking for a solution.

I know this may be stupid but how are you shutting down your pc? if i shut my windows down by holding the power button my settings on desktops wont save, sometimes shortcuts will disappear.

I normally restart it with the restart button on the start menu. If I do shut it down I will use the shut down button. I never turn it off by holding the power button unless something has crashed and windows is unresponsive.

Holding the power button is not shutting down your pc, it's cutting power to it. You should never hold the power button down unless all else has failed, pressing to shut down ok, hold it down not ok.

how many desktop icons you have? i heard that having to many sometimes doesn't save the grid lock.
