Hi all,

I'm after some new tyres for my E38, it sits on P4000's and they are desperate. I'm looking at Goodyear Eagle NCT5's in 215/65/R16's but noticed that I can get F1's in 215/55/16's for the same price, can I I use the 55's rather than 65's? Also, any other recommendations around the £80 bracket?

/edit, would these fit the car, mine are a bit scabby...

The new F1 have had some back feed back, im a heavly into motorsport and a few of the lads have complained that the F1's side walls are a lot softer then they used to be, I use toyo 888 now expensive but why have a nice car then skimp on the only thing that keeps you on the road :D

I agree in general, but when you consider that I have a 728 E38 that doesn't go massively fast. I don't thrash it about, pretty much because you can't. The wife driving 2 tonnes of BMW-fun on cold R888's - that would equal mass-destruction! They need to be good for the commute, not for thrashing. That said, i still want good tyres, not linglongs.

And his alloys will look tiny in the wheel arches without the extra 10% tyre sidewall of the original. Unfortunately (as I found out on my E38) the size of our tyres with it's huge sidewall figure means most tyres are designed for 4x4's and the speed rating is far too slow.

You can fit the same tyre as my 740 has 235-60/16 (which is the same overall size as yours so will fit the alloy and won't rub) and the speedo will only be 0.2mph out ast 60!. I've just had 4 sporty tyres fitted for £240 from www.Valuetyres.co.uk (Sunny somethings) and they've even been used on a trackday at my RAF base without any less grip than the P6000's that were on there originally.

Few things:

DON'T fit 55 profiles instead of 65 profiles, this is a stupid idea.

No idea why some guy is banging on about 888's for an E38?

And giving a recommendation on '(Sunny somethings)' based on the fact the have the same grip as P6000's is a very bad review in itself, shocking tyres.

Good to see you want to buy good quality tyres, i hate people who fit dross, sounds like the NCT5's could be the best option, should be miles better than the P4000's if they are similar to the P6000's they are really bad.

I went from 205/45/R17 to 215/40/R17 and the speedo is out by like 1.5% or something. So, if you take off the profile, you ideally need to add to the width to balance it out.

I did this due to the latter size being much cheaper, plus the CTR wheels are actually 215 wide anyway. The stock tyres have the slight stretch to aid sidewall rigidity.

Use the tyre calc above to work it out. You might find the sidewalls a bit softer but that can be balanced with a bitm ore pressure than usual.

In addition to increased speedometer error (and the speedometer is already up to 10% fast), fuel economy will probably be worse as well.
Acceleration should be better though...;)

Yeah I've got Goodyear NCT5's on my mk2 Focus. They are certainly not as good as the F1's performance wise (yes, I have experience of both tyres), however, they are good tyres in the dry and more than acceptable in the wet. The best thing about these tyres is that they last for bloody ages!

Basically, if you want performance and don't care about how fast they wear away then get the F1's. If you want OK performance and want them to last for ages then get the NCT5's.

Cheers, informative post :)

I need them to be wife-proof to an extent, she will drive it in the wet as well as me. How hard wearing is not an issue, my commute has gone from 60 miles to 6 miles per day, plus I never keep a car *that* long anyway. Any other recommendations?

Well as far as i see it this plan has a few things wrong with it,

- If he doesn't increase the width it going to reduces the rolling radius giving him speedo problems.

- The change in sidewall profile has the possibility of making the wheels look even more stupid in the arches.

- Not sure if he needs to change all four of just two so clearly if he changes just two is going to cause a mismatch in rolling radius.

- Will bring the car lower to the floor (could be seen as a problem)

- Will give a harsher ride
