Stupid question regarding the i52500k

So got my new build up and running, just getting all the updates and stuff.

Installed the newest catalyst drivers etc and then windows 7 goes off and installs some updates. Restart PC and I find that in my display drivers on device manager I have the ATI 5800 series drivers along with Intel HD graphics family which apparently was installed as part of my Windows update.

Now a quick read through suggests that this is the onboard gfx you get with the i5....but despite both being instlaled it looks like the PC is trying to use the Intel graphics as the default gfx rather than the 5850...

I really dont want this...so how do I get the PC to use the 5850 as default.... or to get rid of the Intel HD graphics? Or is this standard to have both and the GFX card is smart enough to swap between them?

Also just wanted to check...after installing CPU-Z its saying the core speed of the CPU is set to 1596.6 and the multiplier is at x16. Is this normal or something off?

Idiot question I know, but just want to make sure I have this sorted before I start looking at doing some OC etc.

Thanks :D

The processor has a built in energy saving setting which lowers the clock speed when you're browsing the internet or listening to music. AMD called it CoolN'Quiet, I don't know what Intel calls theirs.

Regarding the GFX, set the PCIE primary adapter to PCI-E X16 in the BIOS.

Don't know about the GPU thing, but Intel CPUs have something like AMDs CoolNQuiet that gumpy mentioned called SpeedStep that halfs your clock speed when your CPU is idle. You can disable it if you really want to.

Yeah its in the gfx card.

In asrock BIOS the only gfx adapter settings I can pick is pci express, pci and onboard. I've set it to pci express but nothing that allows me to set pci-e x16.?

Thanks for the help :)

Outta interest...is there any way just to get rid of the Intel HD graphics install safely without buggering anything on the PC? Just feel better if its not there haha

This will be my first time attempting to OC and just want everything nice and sorted before I begin :P
