Stupid Question - Which way round should the CPU fan be!?!

Hi all,

Sorry for the really stupid question but it's something that only just struck me when putting my motherboard bundle together.

The bundle has a 6600 Quad processor and it came with the Thermalright SI-128 CPU Cooler heat sink but didn't indicate whether the fan should blow onto the heat sink or suck the air away.

I have initially put the fan with the label on top - so it is blowing air "away" from the heat sink - i.e. outwards.

Is this correct or should it blow air onto the heat sink?

Again excuse my ignorance about these things - it's my first go at putting a PC together!!

to go with the Intel C2D E8500 next year nice jump from a 3.4 ghz cpu with 3 gb memory..

ok point it towards the heatsink. which is still pointing towards the cpu !

Thanks for that, I will adjust it before I get it up and running (just waiting on a BFG 8800GT OC2 - should be here today or tomorrow ).

BTW: that's a very pretty looking heat sink - LOL!!

I'd say it depends on your whole case fan setup and the HSF in question, but yeah, blow at the CPU is best policy.

Wouldn't blowing air towards the CPU blow the hot exaust over the rest of the motherboard? I've always thought it was best practise to mount it the other way round.

Unless you have a special case setup (with perhaps ducting straight over the cpu cooler), blowing onto the CPU is typically the best method of cooling.

The Arctic Freezer is a good one too, at a very good price.

As long as you get the hot air out of the case. So point it toward a rear or top exhaust fan. If its the other way, it cycles hot air around the inside of the case.
