Stupid Slow Speeds With Sky

Samknows says that my area has LLU.

I'm 0.67 miles from the exchange which is pretty far I know so that is probably a big factor.

The speeds I am getting are D/L - 2630 kbps, UL - 388 kbps o_O - this is off this http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

Ping - 132ms

These are statistics off my official router page.

Connection Speed 3069 kbps 797 kbps
Line Attenuation 53 db 33 db
Noise Margin 7 db 12 db

Any ideas on improvements that are possible?

I'm completely new to networks etc. so excuse me if I look like a completely green amateur :D

Less than a mile away I'd expect a lot more than that I'm about a mile away and have been told to expect 15 meg or so your nearly on top of yours personally I'd be disappointed with less than 20

Not sure if that line atten is ok seems mYbe a bit high sure a knowledgable person will be along in a min to give you the lowdown but might be a line issue?

Not sure how long at all really, maybe a year but I'm am not even 50% sure.

I thought it might be a line issue but I'm really not sure. They advertise up to 20 mb/s but I would be happy with 10.

Seeing as it's not a super long distance, I'm suprised you're recieving those speeds. Which exchange are you connected to? Is your modem connected to the master socket and not an extension?

Try your router in the master socket, and then in the test socket behind the master faceplate.

Less than a mile away, you should get at least 15Mb.

I will try that this week, my homeplugs should be coming tomorrow so I can move the router. BTW, I bolded a point that lost me a bit :D

Apologies.

Damn, don't think my parents would allow me to do that, even though it looks easy enough.

How much is it for a new socket to be installed? If it isn't too bad and an electrician can do it then I should be able to have the homeplugs in one master and the router in the other.

If this isn't possible what other options would I have? :S

53 db on line attenuation suggests a lot more than 0.67 miles. My Mum has lower atenuation than that and she is over 2 miles away.

Either incredibly poor wiring between the exchange and you or it's not coming to you direct or you have a really really poor extension in your house.

Check master socket Attenuation and compare Noise margin connection speeds.

As long as both homeplugs are on the same electrical circuit, then I see no problem for the setup you have planned.

As for moving the master socket, not really sure but I heard it can cost around £120 with BT.

You aren't supposed to move master sockets yourself.

Running a decent extension (proper BT spec twisted pair cable) is usually fine and won't add unduly to your attenuation, after all it's what BT use.

BT will charge you to move it. I doubt a reputable electrician would touch BT property either.

Thinking of it, the statistic is completely wrong. I'm pretty sure I said the distance as the crow flies, but I seem to remember it being 2.2 miles to get there, sorry.

Complete schoolboy error. Embarassing.

At the moment an Attenuation of 53 and a SNR of 7db suggests your line is maxed out.

You still need to try the master socket to determine whether your internal wiring is having an effect.

If the Attenuation drops after plugging into the master socket or the SNR goes up then you know the internal wiring needs attention.

As an example Yesterday I renewed the wiring in my house from 12M of flat cheapo extension wiring to BT CW1308 twisted pair and saw a 2 db Attenuation drop (from 11 to 9), a 1.5 db SNR increase and an end to stability issues I hope. I think Sky have me on a profile due to my flaky connection so haven't seen a rise in speed yet.

Looking at it, it does say Sky LLU is enabled. If you're around 1.04km away then something is very wrong with the speeds you're receiving.

I would definitely try the modem on the master socket and see what the line stats are.

I sure will. I will test everything then get back to you with results. This computer I'm using now is wired, so should I try the stats when it is wireless too, as this computer will be running of wireless from now on, as the router will be in a different room? All stats should be the same whether wired or wireless, like attenuation etc.?

Also, great news for me. I think I will be running my PC off a wired connection when I get it. Sweet.

Yep, the line stats will still be the same, wired or wireless.
