Stupid Slow Speeds With Sky

Have done several speed tests and nothing really changed that much. Ping varied between different tests. Having the router plugged in-to a master socket is impossible, it has to go through an adapter, although it didn't seem to do much difference even when I did plug it in-to the master socket and run tests.

This comp isn't wireless so had to move router back but I will move it back next week to give you results.

I have 2.65 dl speed on most tests on this comp, if I ran ethernet cable through ceiling to PS3 & computer, would that be good for on-line gaming? Everything on this computer seems to run really fast, and download speeds aren't too shabby.

I never find speedtests very conclusive when making changes.

If you want a faster connection you need to eliminate your wiring by going straight to master socket and then comparing line attenuation and signal ratio. It is these metrics that determine how fast your connection can be. If there is a marked difference straight to master socket then contact sky to re examine your line.

You might also want them to reduce your max delay setting from default to the lowest if you game online.

I will do some tests today and will post them here for you to look at :D I will look at the router statisitcs then will relay them to you and if they look a bit detached from what they should be I will phone Sky if you think it necessary.

I used to use a long extension to the router which may have had a big effect, but now I will be using one of those plugs that have several outlets on them instead of using a long extension, also the broadband cable is going in-to the router much closer now, it doesn't have to travel around 12 ft to get there now.

Before - router plugged in extension:

Speedtest.net:

Ping – 65ms
Download Speed - 2.64 kbps
Upload Speed - 0.67 kbps

http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

Download Speed – 2636 kbps (329.5 kb/a)
Upload Speed - 660 kbps (82.5 KB/sec)

Router Statisitics

Connection Speed – Downstream – 3069 kbps Upstream – 797 kbps
Line Attenuation – Downstream – 52 db Upstream – 33 db
Noise Margin – Downstream - 6 db Upstream – 12 db

After - router plugged into master socket:

Speedtest.net:

Download Speed - 2.65 kbps
Upload Speed - 0.68 kbps

http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/
Download Speed: 2736 kbps (342 KB/sec )

Upload Speed: 654 kbps (81.8 KB/sec )

Router Statistics

Same as before only noise margin went up by 2db on downstream.

Ideas?

Sounds like Sky have set your profile when you were on the extension and you won't get anymore than that. Phone them up and try and get someone who has access to 'LAMA' who can check your speeds and change your profile if necessary.

EDIT - will try in master socket & test socket soon, I made some mistakes before & I will have to run it on an extension thogh whatever happens.
