well i got bored of waiting and bought a gtx480 plugged it in booted it up yay!!!

oh... wait... it black screens every 5-10minutes and reboots
try 4850... fine, try 8800gtx... fine

the 480 just didnt work right, even felt as though my pc was lagging badly with it in

had to clean format the pc to get it working properly, quick google shows many others having to do that same thing

Can you try the 480 in another machine just to make sure there's no compatibility issues with your machine / faulty card?
This could be good news anyway, you can send it back, wait a wee-while and get one of the new ATI 68XX series when they are released!!!!

Had a long night with screaming baby and brain obviously still in dream land. Ignore me and my spazy head!
If you've gone from an ATI card to Nvidia (or the other way) it's usually a good idea to do a clean OS install just to ensure you don't get issues like you have mentioned.
Nothing really odd about it.
