Stupidly slow LAN transfers

I have 2 machines. The one has a large drive which I'm keeping all my media files on. They're both wired via a Netgear router. When I try and copy files from the large drive to my other machine the transfer speed is absurd. It takes about 3 mins to calculate things, then I get 16kb/s transfer speeds  Doesn't matter if the file is 10MB or 3GB. Even just right clicking on a file on the media drive from the other computer takes about 2 mins just to bring up the menu! Looked in the adapter settings on each machine and can't see anything obvious. Both machines are fairly high-spec.

Any ideas?

If one of the devices is also wireless make sure the wireless is off as it might be using it instead of the wired connection.

Update your network drivers on both PCs.

Check what speed your PCs are connecting to the router at (within network connections of control panel in XP or Network and sharing center in vista / 7)

OK, got this fixed. It was because I hadn't mapped the media drive on the other computer - I was just accessing it from the network icon in Windows Explorer. Mapped it instead and - BHAM - rapid transfers insued :)

Anybody know why that is? What's the difference between accessing the drive through the network option and mapping it?

Mapping the drive shouldn't make any difference, only thing I can think of is sometimes when you click the network icon in Windows Explorer it starts polling the network or gathering info on all devices on the LAN or something, so I tend to avoid it at work.

You could try accessing it via UNC path (i.e. \\servername\share ) which should perform the same as mapping
