Stuttering problem when watching tv recorded with WinTV

I have a Hauppage External USB TV Device, which I use to watch tv with. However when I watch TV live there are no problems at all, but when I record tv and then play back the recording I get strange stutters now and then where the sound will continue but the picture will freeze. Have tried updating drivers which doesn't seem to help. I dont know whether maybe my hard drive is struggling to keep up as on the recording settings under the record quality tab there is only one setting available which is DVD Quality and recordings seem to take up a lot of hd drive space. Does anyone have any suggestions
