Stuttering sound using a/52 over s/pdif

Hi, I'm trying to get 5.1 out of my htpc when watching .mkv's. Using vlc and it stutters all the time so it's either watch them in stereo sound or give up. Anyone know a way around this please?

I use the ffdshow vista codec pack and WMP. have exactly the same issue with VLC :/

Managed to get it sorted. Using mediaplayer classic with the cccp codec pack and ac3 filter. Works like a charm.
