STX & X1's Noise?

I get a very annoying humming noise when I turn my volume up past 20 percent. It is noticable on 100 percent if no sound is being played however you cannot hear it at all in-game.

Why does this happen, what is it called and how can I fix this?

Soundcard: Xonar STX
Headphones: Philips Fidelio x1s

I have exactly the same sound card and headphones as you and I don't have this problem.

It could be electrostatic interference from something in your PC, perhaps caused by a badly shielded front panel audio connector/wire.

If you plug the headphones into the sound-card directly does the noise stop?

It is in the sound card directly. I think it may be interference ... will unplugging the FP audio jack that is plugged into the sound card help? and plug it back into mobo sound?

I don't think that would make any difference but I suppose you could try unplugging it to see, it can't do any harm.

Are you using the original cable? Do you have another cable you could test with?

I can hear interference caused by my GPU when I'm folding but not while idle, there is a three slot gap in between my GPU and my sound card so I suppose if it were closer it may pick up interference while the card is idle.

How spaced out are your cards?

Idling.. anything..

I've got a premium cable... expensive haha but I'll put in another cable to see if I still get the error.

I removed the FP connector and it did nothing.. I did do it while the system was on tho xd

I'd personally have the front fan intaking cool air, the cpu cooler pulling air in from the front and out through the back, and the rear fan and top fan(s) exhausting. I think your cooler will fit over your RAM the other way round? Looks like Vengeance LP?

That way you should be able to get your GPU in the top slot and then choose from any of the other X1 or X16 slots to stick the sound card in. :)

No guarantee that it will alleviate the issue, but its just another thing to try.

I think I understand what you're trying to say. Moving the cooler so it doesn't go up and down but left and right...

Also yes its 16gb veng LP.

I've got two fans intaking into the HDDs, two fans on top extracting, and one rear extracting.

I'll move the cpu cooler right now so its right and left... however I think I won't be able to get two fans as the rear fan might be too big.

I've fixed the audo issue though.. this is the new layout:

hmm also its saying I need to reinstall drivers since I switched lanes.. is this normal? Opening DDU right now to reinstall these drivers
Also on main topic here: my pc is very sexy right

Ahh if the card fits in like that without moving the CPU cooler then I wouldn't worry. But you could always move that fan to the other side of the heatsink so it wont hit the rear fan. :)

I guess it could improve airflow though.

Glad the audio issue is fixed, and yes very sexy. :D

Arghh! There's no way to change it... due to the bracket in the middle of the cooler it's always horizontal.

lol should have thought it through haha feel so stupid

haha now I'm going to go put them back the way they were lol :P

Hmm

While I'm at it whats the best way to make these guys stop vibrating.. it does it intermittently and when I'm holding the hard drives physically the noise and sounds stop.

I meant like this. :p

SDC11369.jpg

Assuming that is your sig spec, you should be able to mount it the other way?

And as for the drive vibration, I dont know really. Is there any way way to put rubber padding/grommets/washers anywhere so the drives aren't just in plastic clipped to metal with no damping?

Mine vibrate a little sometimes too.

I know that you meant that too it's just if you look at the image I was talking about there is a metal strip in the middle of the cooler with two screws, one at top and bottom. The top one is near my VRM cooler and it says "DURABILITY".

That is the reason why I can't change cooler sides.

If you look here: http://www.vortez.net/articles_pages/alpenfoehn_k2_cpu_cooler_review,8.html

you might understand what I mean

Unless i'm mistaken, if you take the cooler off, then move those two bars to the top and bottom rather than the sides, it should work and you should be able to fit the cooler the other way, like in the link you sent? :)

It's only on AMD sockets where it can only be mounted one way because the cooler mounting holes on the board aren't in a square formation.

Oh yeahh.. that's interesting.

I'll do it if I'm ever doing a rebuild as the k2 is a real pain to install as all the reviews have mentioned so clearly.

But it will be meh for now because it's a 30 minute reinstall process ... ideally it takes like 2 minutes if you have a 2nd person.

also edited my post before

Fair enough. :)

Looks great :D But I think some of those cables could do with some tighter bending and tucking away. ;)

It's an older image! :P

I spent pretty much all day today tinkering and adjusting the system.. its strange how every time I do that my hands feel all cut and worn.

Anyways, I've cut out rectangles from my old mouse mats and put them under my case so it is slightly higher up and the vibrations are miniscule ... I just wish I knew how to silence the damn hard drives when system is idle ... its fine for them to spin when I'm playing a game and stuff but when they're constantly spinning its annoying.

The strange thing is I'm running from an SSD so I figured the hard drives would only make noises when I'm accessing/copying to and from them.

I think most drives constantly spin the disks and only eco drives power off when they aren't in use.

Buy a bag of those ferrite rings off ebay and stick a load around all the cables inside the pc and one on all your power cables. Solved my xonar st problem with hum.
